Tom Latham Ruled Out of Pakistan ODIs Due to Fractured Hand

New Zealand Faces Squad Changes Ahead of Pakistan ODI Series

New Zealand has suffered a major setback ahead of their ODI series against Pakistan as wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham has been ruled out due to a fractured right hand. Latham, who was initially set to lead the side in Mitchell Santner’s absence, sustained the injury during a practice session. The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) board has confirmed that Henry Nicholls will replace Latham in the squad, while Michael Bracewell will take over the captaincy responsibilities for the series.

Latham’s Injury and Recovery Timeline

Latham suffered the injury while batting in the nets earlier this week. Following the incident, an X-ray examination confirmed a fracture, ruling him out of action for at least four weeks. He is expected to wear a cast and undergo a rehabilitation program before making a return to competitive cricket.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed his disappointment over Latham’s injury but remained optimistic about the squad’s ability to adapt.

“It’s obviously disappointing to lose Tom as captain on the eve of the series, and we wish him a speedy recovery,” said Stead. “The side is in safe hands with Michael, who has done a great job throughout the T20I series.”

Henry Nicholls Returns After Impressive Domestic Form

With Latham out, Henry Nicholls has been called up as his replacement. The left-handed batter has made a strong comeback from a calf injury, scoring five half-centuries in six innings in domestic cricket. Nicholls, who has 78 ODI appearances for New Zealand, brings a wealth of experience to the squad and is expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming series.

Michael Bracewell to Lead New Zealand ODI Squad

Michael Bracewell, who led the side in the T20I series against Pakistan, will now take over the ODI captaincy in Latham’s absence. Bracewell’s leadership in the shortest format has been commendable, and the team management is confident in his ability to guide the squad in the 50-over format as well.

Additional Squad Adjustments: Will Young to Miss Part of the Series

In another squad development, opener Will Young will miss the second and third ODIs to be with his wife as they await the birth of their first child. Young will play the first match in Napier before departing, after which uncapped Canterbury batter Rhys Mariu will step in as his replacement.

Stead welcomed the inclusion of Mariu and emphasized the importance of giving young players an opportunity to showcase their talent.

“What it does do is offer opportunities to other players, and it’s nice to introduce Rhys into the environment for the first time, as well as welcome back Henry,” Stead stated.

New Zealand’s Road Ahead in the ODI Series

Despite these late changes, New Zealand remains focused on delivering a strong performance against Pakistan. With key players missing, the series presents a chance for fringe players to step up and make an impact on the international stage.
