Suryakumar Yadav Named T20I Captain for Sri Lanka Tour; Rohit Sharma Remains ODI Captain
Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as India’s T20I captain for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, as confirmed by the BCCI on Thursday, July 18, when they announced the squads. Jasprit Bumrah will be rested for the entire tour, while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are included in the ODI squad.
In a notable development, Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain for both the T20I and ODI squads, following his recent leadership role during India’s tour of Zimbabwe. This is a significant change, given that Hardik Pandya was previously the designated deputy in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the recently concluded T20 World Cup. It has been reported that fitness concerns surrounding Hardik Pandya may have influenced the selectors’ decision to not promote him to captaincy. As a result, Pandya will miss the ODI portion of the tour.

There had been speculation about the availability of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the ODIs, but both have been included in the squad, providing a significant boost to the batting lineup. This will be Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment as India’s new coach, and he will benefit from having these experienced players on board. KL Rahul, who was not part of the T20 World Cup squad, retains his place in the ODI team, along with Shreyas Iyer. However, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been left out of the ODI squad, making way for Washington Sundar and Riyan Parag.
Notably, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhishek Sharma, who performed well in the T20I series against Zimbabwe, have not been selected for the ODIs. Another significant omission is Sanju Samson, who had a century in India’s previous ODI and has delivered strong performances when given the chance. Despite this, Samson remains in the T20I squad.
In the pace department, Harshit Rana has been added as the fourth pacer alongside Khaleel Ahmed, Mohd. Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh. Rishabh Pant, who successfully returned to the national team for the T20 World Cup, is also back in the ODI setup.
For spin options, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel will spearhead the spin department in the ODIs. Axar Patel is also included in the T20I squad. Ravi Bishnoi will serve as the wrist-spinner for the T20Is, while Yuzvendra Chahal, who was part of the T20 World Cup squad, has been excluded from both formats.
The tour will commence on July 27 with the T20I series in Pallekele, followed by the ODI matches in Colombo.
