Suryakumar Yadav Begins Rehab at NCA, Eyes Return Ahead of Asia Cup 2025

Suryakumar Yadav Begins Rehabilitation at Centre of Excellence After Surgery
India’s dynamic T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has commenced his recovery journey at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The swashbuckling middle-order batter checked into the BCCI-run Centre of Excellence (CoE) recently, aiming to attain peak fitness ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to be held in the UAE from September 9 to 28.
Suryakumar had undergone sports hernia surgery in Munich, Germany, in June and announced his successful operation via social media on June 26, expressing optimism about a strong comeback.
“Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I’m already on the road to recovery. Can’t wait to be back,” he shared.
As part of the post-operative process, the Indian white-ball skipper is currently undergoing routine fitness assessments and rehabilitation under expert medical supervision at the CoE. This development marks a significant step toward his potential return to international cricket, with the Asia Cup 2025 being the primary target.
Duleep Trophy: Suryakumar Left Out, Thakur to Lead West Zone
Due to his rehab schedule, Suryakumar was not included in the West Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, where Shardul Thakur has been named captain. According to sources close to the West Zone selectors, they had reached out to Suryakumar for clarity on his availability, to which he confirmed his ongoing rehabilitation at the NCA.
As a result, West Zone opted to proceed without him, announcing a 15-member squad featuring prominent names such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, and Tushar Deshpande.
The Duleep Trophy 2025, India’s key domestic four-day competition, will commence on August 28 in Bengaluru. However, West Zone has received a direct semifinal berth and will begin their campaign from September 4, providing additional recovery time for potential last-minute inclusions if necessary.
Shreyas Iyer Also Visits NCA for Fitness Tests
Meanwhile, fellow Mumbai and India cricketer Shreyas Iyer also visited the CoE last week for routine fitness assessments. Iyer, who last captained the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 final, returned to Mumbai following his brief NCA stint. According to sources, the visit was part of standard pre-tournament checks, and Iyer is currently fit and match-ready.
While he has been named in the West Zone Duleep Trophy squad, Iyer remains a contender for national selection ahead of the Asia Cup. His excellent IPL form had sparked conversations around a return to the Indian Test team for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, but the call-up hasn’t yet materialized.
Asia Cup 2025: India Eye Title With Suryakumar in Command
The Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE is set to be a critical tournament for Team India in the build-up to the T20 World Cup 2026. Suryakumar, expected to lead the squad, will look to make a strong comeback following his surgery layoff. His last appearance came during the IPL 2025 season for Mumbai Indians, where he played a key role in the team’s campaign before the injury setback.
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) officials have expressed confidence that Suryakumar will regain full fitness by early September. His leadership and explosive batting will be crucial to India’s chances in a tournament that includes stiff competition from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and other Asian giants.
