Scott Boland Confident Ahead of Home Ashes: “I’m a Better Bowler Now Than in 2023”

Boland Reflects on Growth Since 2023 Ashes

Two years after a challenging Ashes campaign in England, Australian pacer Scott Boland believes he has evolved into a more skilled and confident bowler. In the 2023 series, Boland featured in only two Tests, claiming just two wickets, while Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood led the attack.

Since then, the 36-year-old has played four Tests, bagging 27 wickets, and feels more prepared for the upcoming Ashes 2025 on home soil.

“Even though I’m getting older, I still think my skills are improving. I’m in the twilight of my career, but I’m still learning what helps me perform at 100%,” Boland said.

Fitness and Longevity in Focus

Boland, the oldest in Australia’s pace attack, emphasised the importance of maintaining peak fitness for a long, grueling series. Head coach Andrew McDonald has encouraged him to make adjustments to ensure his body stays in top condition.

Despite often being the backup to Australia’s premier quicks, Boland made headlines in his last Test against West Indies, picking a hat-trick in a rare four-pacer strategy. However, he does not expect that approach in the home Ashes, citing Nathan Lyon’s importance and the return of Cameron Green as an additional bowling option.

Recovery Time Key for Bowlers

With the Ashes schedule providing eight-day gaps between the first two Tests and again between the second and third, Boland is optimistic about recovery opportunities. However, shorter turnarounds later in the series could be physically demanding, as he experienced in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last year.

“It probably takes a session or two to get going again, even when you think you’re ready,” he admitted.

On England’s Sledging Tactics

With England expected to bring their aggressive “Bazball” style and possible sledging, Boland remains unfazed.

“They can do whatever they want. We’ve been consistent in our approach for the last four years. If they want to sledge, that’s fine – it won’t worry us.”

The Ashes 2025 kicks off on November 21 at the Perth Stadium, where Lyon has an outstanding record.
