RR Captain Riyan Parag Slapped With Hefty Fine For Breaching IPL Code Of Conduct

Rajasthan Royals’ Victory Marred by Slow-Over Rate Penalty

The Rajasthan Royals (RR) secured their first victory of the IPL 2025 season by defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a thrilling contest. However, the joy of their hard-fought win was slightly dampened as RR’s stand-in captain, Riyan Parag, was slapped with a hefty fine for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct.

Parag Penalized for Slow-Over Rate Violation

The IPL governing body fined Riyan Parag INR 12 lakh for maintaining a slow-over rate during Match 11 of the tournament against CSK. As per Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, a team must complete its quota of 20 overs within the stipulated time. However, RR failed to meet this requirement, leading to disciplinary action against their captain.

Since this was Parag’s first slow-over rate offence of the season, he was penalized with a monetary fine only. However, repeated infractions could result in harsher consequences. If Parag, who is leading the team in the absence of regular captain Sanju Samson, commits the same offence again, he risks facing a one-match suspension in addition to a higher financial penalty.

IPL’s Strict Over-Rate Regulations

The IPL Code of Conduct mandates that all teams must complete their allotted 20 overs within the designated time frame. Failing to do so can result in severe penalties for the captain and, in cases of repeated violations, for the entire team.

The Rajasthan Royals were found guilty of not keeping up with the required over rate, which led to the fine imposed on Parag. The IPL governing body has been particularly strict about enforcing these regulations to maintain the pace of the game and avoid unnecessary delays.

Rajasthan Royals’ Thrilling Victory Over CSK

Despite the setback off the field, RR delivered a strong performance on it, securing a close six-run victory over CSK. Batting first, RR set a target of 183, thanks to key contributions from their top-order batters. In response, CSK struggled early on, losing wickets at crucial moments. Although they fought back in the middle overs, the Royals’ disciplined bowling in the death overs sealed the win for them, giving Parag his first win as RR’s captain.

Hardik Pandya – The First Offender of IPL 2025

Parag is not the only captain to have been penalized for a slow-over rate this season. Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya was the first offender of IPL 2025, receiving an identical INR 12 lakh fine. Notably, Pandya had already committed three slow-over rate offences in IPL 2024, leading to a suspension for MI’s opening match of IPL 2025 against CSK.

The IPL has made it clear that repeat offenders will face stricter penalties, including potential match suspensions. With multiple captains already facing fines, teams will have to be extra cautious about maintaining their over rates to avoid further consequences.

Looking Ahead: RR’s Next Challenge

With one win and two losses so far, the Rajasthan Royals will be looking to build momentum and improve their over-rate management in the coming matches. As Parag leads in Samson’s absence, ensuring compliance with the league’s regulations will be crucial for both his captaincy and the team’s success.
