Priyank Panchal Announces Retirement from First-Class Cricket After Illustrious Career

Gujarat’s Batting Pillar Bids Farewell to Red-Ball Cricket
In a heartfelt announcement that marked the end of an era, Gujarat stalwart Priyank Panchal has officially retired from first-class cricket, bringing down the curtain on a distinguished career that spanned nearly two decades. The 35-year-old batter, who has been the backbone of Gujarat’s batting line-up, made the decision public through an emotional social media post.
A Record-Breaking Journey with Gujarat
Panchal’s red-ball legacy is firmly etched in Indian domestic cricket history. Amassing close to 9000 runs, he leaves behind a record of consistency and determination. His crowning glory came during the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy season, where he scored over 1300 runs — a feat that remains one of the highest single-season tallies in the tournament’s long and storied legacy.
A Defining Knock and a Memorable Campaign
Priyank’s last first-class innings saw him scoring a defiant 148 in the Ranji Trophy semifinal against Kerala. Unfortunately, Gujarat fell short by just two runs in the first-innings lead, which prevented them from qualifying for the final. Nevertheless, Panchal’s innings was a fitting finale to his career, showcasing his resilience and class even in high-pressure situations.
A Career Beyond the Red Ball
While he is best remembered for his contributions in the longer format, Priyank Panchal also made significant contributions in white-ball cricket. In List A matches, he featured in 97 games and scored eight centuries. In the T20 format, he played 59 games, with his final appearance coming as recently as October 2023.
Though Panchal represented India A on numerous occasions and was even in contention for the national team, the India cap eluded him. He was never picked for the senior team or in the IPL, making his domestic achievements all the more remarkable given the limited visibility and recognition.
A Tribute to His Roots and Inspiration
In his farewell message, Panchal paid tribute to his late father, who he said remained his biggest source of inspiration throughout his journey. He reminisced about carrying the dream of donning the India cap for two decades and expressed immense gratitude for the journey that shaped his life.
“Growing up, everyone looks up to their father, idolises them, gets inspired, and tries to impress them,” Panchal wrote. “He left us long ago, and it was a dream I carried with me for nearly two decades, season after season, until today.”
One of Gujarat’s Finest – A Legacy Sealed
Panchal holds the record for the most centuries by a Gujarat batter in first-class cricket. His consistent performances, leadership, and calm demeanor made him a role model for younger players in the team and across Indian domestic cricket.
