Bangladesh Head Coach Phil Simmons Temporarily Leaves Sri Lanka Tour for Medical Reasons

Simmons Heads to London for Pre-Scheduled Doctor’s Appointment
Bangladesh men’s national cricket team head coach Phil Simmons has left the ongoing Sri Lanka tour to attend a pre-scheduled medical appointment in London. The veteran coach, who joined Bangladesh’s coaching staff earlier this year, is expected to be away from the team for two days and will return in time for the third ODI of the three-match series.
Team officials have confirmed that Simmons’ brief departure is unrelated to recent performance issues or team management concerns, clarifying that this trip had been communicated with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) well in advance.
Clarification Amid Speculation Over BCB Summon
Team Manager Confirms Legitimate Medical Reason
Amid rumors suggesting that Simmons was being called for a performance review by BCB president Aminul Islam, team manager Nafees Iqbal clarified the situation on Friday.
“Phil Simmons is going to tour for two days for personal reasons,” said Nafees. “He had a doctor’s appointment in February but missed it due to the Champions Trophy. This time the appointment could not be rescheduled despite efforts. He spoke with the board before the tour and planned this accordingly.”
This statement shuts down speculation of disciplinary or strategic evaluations and reinforces that Simmons remains in good standing with the board and team.

Bangladesh’s Struggles in the Sri Lanka Series Continue
Inconsistent Performances Across Formats
Simmons’ temporary absence comes at a challenging time for the Bangladesh national team. Although they put up a solid fight in the first Test, which ended in a draw, the team faltered in the second Test, conceding the series 1-0 to the hosts. Their woes continued in the first ODI, where Bangladesh suffered a dramatic batting collapse after a promising start.
The timing of Simmons’ absence could be seen as unfortunate, but the coach is expected to return on July 7, just ahead of the final ODI. Following the conclusion of the ODI series, Bangladesh are set to face Sri Lanka in three T20 Internationals, a format where they’ve recently shown signs of promise and will hope to bounce back.
Looking Ahead: Return of Simmons and the Road to T20Is
Simmons’ return ahead of the third ODI is expected to bring stability and focus back into the Bangladesh camp. His leadership and tactical experience will be crucial as the team prepares for the T20I leg of the Sri Lanka tour, where performance will be key ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup cycle.
Bangladesh’s fans will be hoping that Simmons’ brief exit won’t disrupt team dynamics, and that his comeback inspires a turnaround in form.
