Nick Kelly and Muhammad Abbas Receive Maiden Call-Up for Pakistan ODIs

New Zealand Names Uncapped Duo for ODI Series Against Pakistan
New Zealand has announced its squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Pakistan, introducing two uncapped players, Nick Kelly and Muhammad Abbas. Both players have been rewarded for their stellar performances in the domestic circuit and will now have the opportunity to showcase their talent on the international stage.
Nick Kelly’s Remarkable Domestic Season Earns Selection
Nick Kelly, a 31-year-old left-handed batsman, has been in phenomenal form in domestic cricket. Over the course of the season, he has amassed more than 1,300 runs across formats, solidifying his reputation as one of the most consistent performers. His ability to play aggressive strokes and accumulate runs under pressure has earned him a spot in the national team.
Kelly is expected to open the batting alongside Will Young in the absence of Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, both of whom are currently participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL). His aggressive style at the top will be crucial for New Zealand against Pakistan’s bowling attack.
Muhammad Abbas – A Rising Star in New Zealand Cricket
At just 21 years old, Muhammad Abbas has quickly made a name for himself as a promising all-rounder. Originally from Pakistan, Abbas migrated to New Zealand and has since impressed with his performances in the Ford Trophy. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a valuable asset, particularly with Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips unavailable for the series.
Sam Wells, New Zealand’s chief selector, praised Abbas:
“Mo is one of our most promising young batters and also provides a crucial sixth bowling option. His selection comes at the right time, as we continue to build for future international tournaments.”
Adi Ashok Returns to International Cricket
Leg-spinner Adi Ashok, who made his debut against Bangladesh in December 2023, has been named in the squad as well. Ashok has been in fine form for Auckland, particularly excelling in the middle overs with his control and accuracy. His inclusion adds variety to New Zealand’s bowling attack, complementing the pace-heavy squad.
Sam Wells on Adi Ashok:
“Adi’s performances for Auckland have been impressive. His accuracy and control in the middle overs make him a valuable addition to the squad.”
Absence of Key Players and Leadership Change
With Mitchell Santner unavailable, Tom Latham has been named captain for the series. Meanwhile, regular fast bowlers Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson are also absent, with Henry recovering from shoulder and knee injuries, and Jamieson being rested to manage workload.
This ODI series marks a significant shift in New Zealand’s team composition, as only eight players from the Champions Trophy final squad have been retained.
ODI Series Schedule
The series consists of three ODIs across three venues:
-
First ODI: March 29 – McLean Park, Napier
-
Second ODI: April 2 – Seddon Park, Hamilton
-
Third ODI: April 5 – Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui
New Zealand has already dominated Pakistan in the T20I series, securing a series win with a game to spare. The Black Caps will now look to carry that momentum into the ODIs.
