Nicholas Pooran Takes Over as Trinbago Knight Riders Captain for CPL 2025

The Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) have ushered in a new era of leadership for the 2025 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) by appointing Nicholas Pooran as captain, succeeding the experienced Kieron Pollard. Pooran’s elevation marks a significant moment in the franchise’s history, blending youthful energy with seasoned guidance from some of the league’s most decorated T20 stars.
A Leadership Transition Steeped in Legacy
Kieron Pollard, who captained TKR from 2019 to 2024, led the franchise to one CPL title (2020) and two additional playoff appearances during his six-year tenure. While stepping down as captain, the 38-year-old powerhouse remains an integral part of the squad.
Dwayne Bravo, another iconic figure in West Indies cricket, has returned to TKR as head coach, replacing Phil Simmons, who is now at the helm of the Bangladesh national team (source). The appointment of Pooran signifies a deliberate move by the management to prepare for the franchise’s long-term future.
Pooran’s Perspective on the Captaincy
Honoring Those Who Led Before Him
Pooran expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in him, highlighting the leadership lineage of the franchise:
“It’s a privilege to lead this franchise. This responsibility has been passed on from Bravo to Pollard and now to me. The most satisfying thing is having experienced players like Pollard, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell still around to guide me.”
The left-handed batter recalled his journey from debuting at 17 for T&T Red Steel under Bravo, to overcoming a career-threatening accident in 2015, and later reuniting with Bravo and Pollard at TKR. Despite not yet winning a title together, Pooran remains optimistic about their chances this year.
A Proven T20 Performer
Pooran holds the distinction of being the youngest debutant in CPL history and has accumulated over 9,000 runs in global T20 leagues at a blistering strike rate of nearly 149. His 2024 CPL campaign was particularly impressive, as he topped TKR’s scoring charts with 504 runs in 11 matches at an average of 56.
This attacking prowess, combined with his growing tactical acumen, makes him a natural fit for the leadership role. Fans can revisit some of Pooran’s explosive knocks from last season in our CPL highlights section.
Pollard and Bravo’s Endorsement
Pollard praised the decision, revealing that the leadership transition had been in the works for years:
“Pooran is homegrown, understands our values, and has the respect of players around the world. We’ve been grooming him for this role, and now is the right time.”
Bravo echoed similar sentiments, framing the change as part of the franchise’s long-term vision:
“Just like I handed over to Pollard, now he’s doing the same with Pooran. We believe he’s on the verge of becoming one of the greatest T20 players.”
TKR’s Season Opener
The Trinbago Knight Riders will kick off their CPL 2025 campaign against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots at Warner Park on August 17. With a mix of youthful flair and veteran experience, the team will aim to reclaim the championship title under Pooran’s leadership.
