Narine’s all-round performance propels KKR to the leading position | IPL 2024

Kolkata Knight Riders showcased a dominant performance, led by Sunil Narine, securing a commanding 98-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants. This win propelled KKR to the top of the points table. Their impressive total of 235 for 6 was the first time any team had surpassed 200 runs at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Lucknow Super Giants fell short in their chase, getting bowled out for 137.

The distinction lies in the middle overs

KKR not only sustained their early momentum in the middle overs, largely thanks to Sunil Narine’s aggressive batting, but also stifled LSG’s chase with their bowling. They took seven wickets during this crucial phase, conceding just 60 runs, effectively halting LSG’s progress and securing a comprehensive victory.

Narine and Salt maintain their aggressive play during the powerplay phase

KKR: 70/1 (RR: 11.67, 11 boundaries, 2 sixes)

Phil Salt and Narine continued their strong partnership at the top, giving KKR another explosive start. Salt started with a boundary off the first ball, while Narine attacked Naveen ul Haq in the third over. Unlike usual, they focused more on boundaries than sixes, scoring 61 runs in 25 balls before Salt was dismissed. Yash Thakur bowled a tight first over, but KKR managed to score the highest runs by any team against LSG this season in the powerplay.

During the middle overs, Narine played aggressively but Lucknow Super Giants fought back

KKR: 101/2 (RR: 11.22, 4 fours, 8 sixes)

After the field restrictions were lifted, Narine launched an aggressive assault, particularly targeting the short balls. His most brutal display was against Marcus Stoinis, whom he smashed for three sixes in four balls during the 11th over. Raghuvanshi also supported briefly, rotating the strike and allowing Narine to unleash his power. Narine had some fortune, as a catch by Devdutt Padikkal at long off resulted in him tripping over the ropes. Shortly after, he survived a diving attempt by Mohsin Khan at short third man. However, he couldn’t capitalize on these chances and was eventually caught by Padikkal at the same position off Ravi Bishnoi’s wrong ‘un. Andre Russell’s stay was short but impactful, forcing the bowlers to stray from their lines.

In the death overs, Ramandeep delivered a late surge for the team

KKR: 64/3 (RR: 12.80, 6 fours, 3 sixes)

During the death overs, KKR struggled to accelerate as needed. Raghuvanshi was dismissed after a promising start, thanks to a fine catch by substitute K Gowtham. Following his departure, Rinku Singh and Shreyas Iyer appeared uneasy, struggling to handle the slower deliveries bowled at hard lengths. However, the LSG bowlers failed to consistently hit the hard lengths, allowing Iyer and Ramandeep Singh to capitalize on the full deliveries. Ramandeep, in particular, was aggressive, smashing three sixes and a four in his six-ball innings as KKR set the highest T20 total at the venue.

Lucknow Super Giants

During the powerplay, Stoinis made a brisk start

LSG: 55/1 (RR: 9.17, 7 fours, 2 sixes)

In their pursuit of a challenging target, LSG started aggressively, with KL Rahul hitting a boundary off the first ball. Despite losing Arshin Kulkarni early, they maintained their attacking approach. Stoinis played a key role, smashing three boundaries off four balls from Mitchell Starc in the fourth over. He followed this up with a six off Harshit Rana in the sixth over, injecting momentum into the chase. This was the most productive powerplay for LSG this season.

During the middle overs, LSG’s innings fell apart

LSG: 60/7 (RR: 6.67, 3 fours, 4 sixes)

The middle overs proved disastrous for LSG as their innings crumbled. It started with Rahul’s dismissal at deep point in the eighth over, and the collapse continued unabated. Hooda was trapped LBW in the following over, followed by dismissals of Russell, Stoinis, and Pooran. Narine and Chakravarthy compounded their misery by dismissing Badoni and Turner. LSG struggled to find momentum and their aggressive approach backfired, leading to a relentless downfall.

In the death overs, LSG’s batting order collapsed

LSG: 7/2 in 1.1 overs (RR 6.00, 0 fours, 1 six)

Facing an inevitable defeat, LSG’s innings quickly concluded with KKR’s bowlers swiftly taking the last two wickets. Despite a DRS review by Ravi Bishnoi, LSG couldn’t prolong their innings and were all out in just 3.5 overs.

Brief Scores: Kolkata Knight Riders scored 235/6 in 20 overs (Sunil Narine 81, Phil Salt 32; Naveen-ul-Haq 3-49) and beat Lucknow Super Giants who scored 137 in 16.1 overs (Marcus Stoinis 36, KL Rahul 25; Harshit Rana 3-24, Varun Chakravarthy 3-30) by 98 runs.

After this match, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will head back home and enjoy a lengthy break before their next game against Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens on Saturday. This break will provide them with an opportunity to rest, recover, and prepare for their upcoming match.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), on the other hand, will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Hyderabad to face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Wednesday. They will need to regroup quickly, address their shortcomings from this match, and focus on putting up a better performance in their next game.
