Mumbai Indians Clinch WPL 2025 Title as Nat Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet Kaur Shine

Mumbai Indians Edge Past Delhi Capitals to Reclaim WPL Crown
Mumbai Indians (MI) reclaimed their Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 title with a thrilling eight-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) in the final. Nat Sciver-Brunt’s all-round brilliance and a captain’s knock from Harmanpreet Kaur ensured MI’s second WPL championship, as Delhi Capitals suffered heartbreak in their third consecutive final.
Early Setbacks for Delhi Capitals in the Chase
Hoping to end their title drought, Delhi Capitals got off to a disastrous start while chasing 150. Star openers Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma fell inside the first three overs, putting DC on the back foot early on. Sciver-Brunt delivered a perfect off-cutter to breach Lanning’s defense, while Shabnim Ismail trapped Verma LBW with a well-directed delivery.
Jemimah Rodrigues and Jess Jonassen attempted to revive the innings, striking three boundaries in the sixth over, but their efforts were short-lived. Amelia Kerr’s introduction into the attack brought immediate success as Jonassen mistimed a googly, gifting an easy catch. The Capitals’ troubles deepened when Saika Ishaque had Annabel Sutherland stumped, reducing them to 44/4.
Marizanne Kapp’s Heroics Keep Delhi in the Hunt
With DC struggling at 66/5, Marizanne Kapp stepped up to the occasion. The South African all-rounder played a counter-attacking innings, launching a six off Sciver-Brunt and finding boundaries against Hayley Matthews and Ishaque. A fiery over saw Kapp smashing 4,6,4 off Ishaque, bringing the required runs down to 35 off 24 balls.
Niki Prasad, playing a supporting role, contributed with a timely drive. With just 29 needed off 18 balls, the game was finely balanced. However, Sciver-Brunt showcased her experience by dismissing Kapp and Shikha Pandey on consecutive deliveries, crushing DC’s hopes. Though Prasad struck a massive six off Matthews, MI’s bowlers held their nerve in the final over, conceding only five runs when DC needed 14, sealing the victory for Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai’s Gritty Batting Performance Sets Up Victory
Kaur and Sciver-Brunt Steady the Ship
Earlier, MI had a shaky start after losing Hayley Matthews and Yastika Bhatia cheaply. Marizanne Kapp and Shikha Pandey’s tight bowling kept MI at just 10 runs in the first four overs. Kapp bowled a peach of a delivery to dismiss Matthews and later sent back Bhatia, leaving MI struggling at 28/2 after eight overs.

Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt then took charge, initially playing cautiously before launching an assault. Sciver-Brunt struck a couple of boundaries, while Kaur went after Sutherland for a six and a four. The momentum shift saw Kaur smashing Jonassen for three consecutive boundaries and adding two more off Minnu Mani. Her fifty, reached in style, came during a five-over blitz that added 59 runs to MI’s total.
Late Strikes Slow Down Mumbai Indians
As MI looked set for a big total, Sciver-Brunt fell after hitting one straight to square leg. DC capitalized on the breakthrough as Kerr and Sajana were dismissed in quick succession by Jonassen, and Kaur’s dismissal at deep extra cover off Sutherland further dented MI’s progress. From 103/2, MI slumped to 118/6. However, some crucial runs from the lower order ensured MI reached 149/7, a total that ultimately proved match-winning.
Mumbai Indians Celebrate Their Second WPL Title
Despite a valiant effort from Marizanne Kapp, Delhi Capitals fell short yet again, losing their third consecutive final. Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, celebrated their triumph, cementing their dominance in the Women’s Premier League.
