Mohammad Nabi Aims to Play ODI Cricket with His 18-Year-Old Son Eishakhil

Afghanistan Cricket Board Supports Nabi’s U-Turn on ODI Retirement

Afghanistan’s veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has reconsidered his plans to retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs), expressing his desire to continue playing beyond the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. His dream? To represent Afghanistan alongside his 18-year-old son, Hassan Eishakhil.

Earlier, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) had confirmed that Nabi intended to retire from ODIs after the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19, 2025. However, in a recent statement to ICC, the 39-year-old legend hinted at extending his career, stating that his decision would depend on his fitness levels and performance.

Nabi’s Dream to Play with His Son in International Cricket

A Father-Son Duo in Afghan Cricket?

Nabi, who has been a cornerstone of Afghanistan cricket since their rise in international cricket, now has his eyes set on a unique milestone—sharing the field with his son in an ODI match.

“These might not be my last ODIs (the Champions Trophy), and I will probably play fewer ODIs while giving chances to youngsters to gain experience. However, if my fitness allows, I may continue,” Nabi shared in an ICC interview.

His son, Hassan Eishakhil, was part of Afghanistan’s Under-19 squad at the 2024 ICC U-19 World Cup. The young opener had a tough tournament, scoring only 43 runs in four matches, but his father remains confident about his potential.

“It’s my dream to play together for the country, and hopefully, we can achieve that. He is working very hard, and I always push him to improve,” Nabi said.

The Rise of Mohammad Nabi in Afghan Cricket

From Afghanistan’s First ODI to a Cricketing Icon

Nabi’s impact on Afghanistan’s cricketing journey has been monumental. He played in Afghanistan’s first-ever ODI match in 2009 against Scotland, where he made an immediate mark with a half-century. Over the years, he has been instrumental in Afghanistan’s rise from an associate team to a global powerhouse in limited-overs cricket.

The ACB President, Mirwais Ashraf, praised Nabi’s contribution, highlighting how his experience and leadership have played a pivotal role in the team’s growth.

“Mohammad Nabi is a living legend in Afghan cricket. From the days when cricket was almost nonexistent in Afghanistan to now, with the team ranked among the world’s top eight, no one has contributed more to the sport’s growth than him,” said Ashraf.

“Whether he chooses to retire or continue playing is entirely up to him. His performances in batting, bowling, and fielding, along with his remarkable fitness, prove that age is just a number,” he added.

Afghanistan’s Champions Trophy Campaign

A Tough Road Ahead for the Afghan Squad

Afghanistan will begin their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a challenging fixture against South Africa on February 21 in Karachi. They will then face England on February 26 and Australia on February 28 in Lahore.

With Rashid Khan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman leading the squad, Afghanistan will be aiming for a strong performance in the tournament. Nabi’s experience will be crucial in guiding the young squad against top cricketing nations.
