Mirwais Ashraf Set to Lead Afghanistan Cricket Board for Another Three Years

Mirwais Ashraf is poised to continue as the Chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) for an additional three-year term. This decision was confirmed to Cricbuzz by a senior ACB official on Friday, who requested anonymity.

Mirwais Ashraf’s Extended Tenure as ACB Chairman

Ashraf, who first assumed the role of ACB chairman in 2021, was initially expected to conclude his term in August 2023. However, due to his commendable performance over the past three years, the Taliban government has decided to extend his tenure. According to the ACB official, “The Taliban government has recognized Ashraf’s contributions and decided to extend his term as Chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board for another three years.”

Stability and Performance: Key Reasons for Ashraf’s Reappointment

The official emphasized the importance of stability in achieving success. “Stability is crucial for our progress, and we strive to maintain it,” the official said. “In the past three years, we have had a consistent leadership structure with one chairman, one CEO, and one coach, and we have only changed our captain once. Our focus is on building a strong cricketing foundation without frequent changes.”

It has been revealed that Mullah Muhammad Hassan, the Patron-in-chief and Prime Minister of Afghanistan, played a significant role in the decision to extend Ashraf’s term. Ashraf, who was initially appointed as the head of the board and later re-elected, will continue in his role until December, when the next Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held.

The upcoming election in December is expected to follow the ACB’s constitution and international standards, with board members electing the new chairman through a transparent voting process. Given Ashraf’s strong backing from the Patron-in-chief, he is anticipated to secure re-election with minimal opposition.
