Mehidy Hasan Miraz Set to Boost Bangladesh Squad in Second Test Against Sri Lanka

Vice-Captain Returns After Fever; Colombo Test Set for June 25
Bangladesh’s hopes of leveling the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka have received a significant boost as Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the team’s Test vice-captain and premier all-rounder, is on track to return for the second Test in Colombo beginning June 25.
Mehidy was sidelined from the series opener in Galle due to illness and missed the crucial two-day training session prior to the match. However, his return to training has all but confirmed his availability for the upcoming clash at the P. Sara Oval.
Mehidy Rejoins Squad After Missing Galle Test
Illness Kept Vice-Captain Out of Series Opener
Concerns over Mehidy’s health emerged when he did not participate in practice sessions leading up to the first Test and remained absent from the ground during its first two days. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chose not to rush his recovery and officially rested him from the game.
But on Thursday, June 19, team manager Nafees Iqbal provided a reassuring update, stating:
“He (Mehidy) is much better and came to the ground today.”
This confirmation came as Mehidy joined training, signaling his likely return to the playing XI. Given the Colombo surface’s reputation for assisting spin, Mehidy’s return could be pivotal.
Anamul Haque’s Missed Opportunity in Galle
With Mehidy unavailable, Anamul Haque Bijoy was brought in as a replacement in the Galle Test. However, the top-order batter failed to make an impact, registering a duck in the first innings and offering little resistance against Sri Lanka’s bowling attack.
The management will now likely revert to Mehidy, who not only strengthens the lower-middle order but also provides vital breakthroughs with his off-spin.
Colombo Pitch Conditions Favor Spin
As the second Test draws closer, team analysts believe that the Colombo pitch at P. Sara Oval is expected to offer significant turn and bounce, making Mehidy’s inclusion even more strategic. His track record in such conditions is impressive, both with bat and ball, and could be crucial in helping Bangladesh level the series.
Mushtaq Ahmed Temporarily Leaves Squad
In a parallel development, spin bowling consultant Mushtaq Ahmed has temporarily exited the team setup. The former Pakistan leg-spinner, who had been working closely with Bangladesh’s spinners in Dhaka and Galle, left on June 17 after completing his pre-scheduled duties.

A BCB official confirmed that Mushtaq is set to rejoin the squad on July 6 during the ODI series:
“BCB and Mushtaq have a contract based on the number of working days. He was present during the preparation phase and left after completing his scheduled duties. He will return on July 6.”

With Mehidy Hasan Miraz expected to make his return, Bangladesh have a real chance to bounce back in the second Test against Sri Lanka. His dual abilities as a dependable lower-order batsman and effective spinner could be the difference-maker on a spin-friendly Colombo surface. The team will also look forward to Mushtaq Ahmed’s return during the ODIs, as Bangladesh prepares for a long tour that could shape their 2025 cricket calendar.
