Mahmudullah’s comeback highlights Bangladesh’s formidable World Cup squad | T20
Veteran batter Mahmudullah, who missed out on the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, has been included in Bangladesh’s squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA/West Indies.
Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead the 15-member squad, with Taskin Ahmed as his deputy. Due to an injury concern for Taskin, Hasan Mahmud has been called up as a replacement for the upcoming T20Is against the USA. However, selectors are optimistic about Taskin’s recovery in time for the World Cup, entrusting him with the vice-captaincy. Hasan Mahmud and Afif Hossain are named as reserves.
Squad: Najmul Hossain Shanto(c), Tanzim Hasan Tamim, Litton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Soumya Sarkar, Jaker Ali, Mahedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Tanvir Islam, Rishad Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Tanzid Hasan Sakib
Mahmudullah’s return is the main highlight of the squad. The 38-year-old, absent from the T20I team since September 2022, made his comeback in the home series against Sri Lanka in March. Since then, he has been a consistent presence in the T20Is against Zimbabwe, making him a strong contender for the final squad. However, there was some uncertainty about his selection due to the unpredictable decisions of Bangladesh’s selection committee regarding senior players.
Mustafizur Rahman leads the pace attack, which also includes Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed. Bowling all-rounder Tanzim Sakib serves as the fourth seamer. The squad features three specialist spin bowlers: Mahedi Hasan, Tanvir Islam, and Rishad Hossain, along with the seasoned Shakib Al Hasan.
