KKR Humiliate CSK in Record Chepauk Defeat as Dhoni’s Return Fails to Inspire Turnaround

Chennai Super Kings Hit Rock Bottom at Home Against Ruthless Kolkata Knight Riders
The much-anticipated return of MS Dhoni as captain failed to inspire the Chennai Super Kings, as they were handed a crushing defeat by Kolkata Knight Riders in what turned out to be their lowest-ever score at Chepauk. The five-time IPL champions were dismantled by a disciplined KKR bowling unit and left fans stunned with a fifth consecutive loss — their worst ever streak. Meanwhile, KKR, the defending champions, made light work of the modest 104-run target, chasing it down in just 10.1 overs with 59 balls to spare.
CSK’s Struggles Begin in the PowerPlay
Lack of Aggression With the Bat Proves Costly
The Chennai Super Kings chose to bat first but failed to make use of the PowerPlay, managing only 31/2 in the first six overs. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra couldn’t get going, both falling cheaply after sluggish starts. While Conway was out attempting a reverse sweep, Ravindra was caught trying to hit Harshit Rana out of the ground. Ten of the first 18 balls were dots — a critical stat that showed how CSK failed to assert themselves early on.
In contrast, KKR’s opening duo blasted 71 runs in their PowerPlay, hitting seven sixes compared to CSK’s zero. This difference in approach and execution defined the course of the game.
Spin Trouble Sinks CSK in the Middle Overs
Sunil Narine, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Harshit Rana spun a web around the CSK middle order. A promising 43-run stand between Vijay Shankar and Rahul Tripathi was the only flicker of hope before the innings collapsed.
Varun outsmarted Vijay with a deceptive delivery, while Narine accounted for Tripathi and Jadeja in quick succession. Ashwin, promoted up the order, also fell cheaply. Deepak Hooda’s entry as the Impact Player made no difference, as he too was dismissed by Varun, leaving CSK in tatters at 72/7.
CSK Hit All-Time Low at Chepauk
Despite Shivam Dube’s gritty knock of 31* and a late flourish, Chennai could only manage 103/9 — their lowest total at Chepauk. Dhoni, walking in at No. 9, was dismissed LBW by Narine, who finished with brilliant figures of 3/13. The veteran off-spinner played a pivotal role in ensuring CSK’s downfall.”
KKR’s Fiery Chase Crushes CSK’s Net Run Rate
KKR came out with clear intent and dismantled CSK’s bowling attack. Narine and Quinton de Kock added 46 in no time, punishing CSK’s seamers. Despite Narine falling for a rapid 44 off 18 balls, the chase was never in doubt.
Ajinkya Rahane and Rinku Singh calmly finished things off, giving KKR a huge Net Run Rate boost from -0.056 to +0.803. The 10.1-over chase was one of the most dominant performances in IPL 2025 so far.

What Lies Ahead for CSK and KKR?
Chennai Super Kings have very little time to regroup. They will travel to Lucknow for a clash against LSG on April 14, hoping to break their losing streak. Read latest IPL Updates here.
Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders will look to carry forward their momentum as they face Punjab Kings in New Chandigarh on April 15. The defending champions appear to be peaking at the right time, and their bowling unit looks formidable.
