Karishma Ramharack Four-Wicket Haul Powers West Indies to Victory Over Bangladesh in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024
West Indies Secure Commanding Win Over Bangladesh in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024
The West Indies Women registered their second win in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 with a dominating eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh. Karishma Ramharack, the offspinner, led the charge, claiming four crucial wickets to restrict Bangladesh to a modest total of 103. West Indies, in response, chased down the target with ease, further strengthening their position in Group B of the tournament.
Bangladesh Struggles Against West Indies’ Spin Attack
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Bangladesh faced immediate pressure from the West Indies bowlers on the slow surface of Sharjah. The PowerPlay overs proved difficult for the Bangladeshi openers, with both batters falling cheaply. Bangladesh managed to put up only 33 runs in the first six overs. Shathi Rani was the first to go, falling to a sharp stumping by Shemaine Campbell off Karishma Ramharack’s very first ball. Dilara Akter soon followed, bowled by Ramharack, leaving Bangladesh in trouble at 33/2.
The West Indies’ decision to rely on their spinners was vindicated as the Bangladesh batters found it difficult to score freely. Ramharack, in particular, was unplayable, using her variations on the turning track to dismantle Bangladesh’s top order.
Nigar Sultana Fights Back Amidst the Collapse
Skipper Nigar Sultana provided some resistance for Bangladesh, building a 40-run partnership with Shobhana Mostary to steady the innings. Sultana looked to counter-attack and managed to pick up three boundaries off Afy Fletcher in a single over, attempting to regain momentum for her team.
Sultana was fortunate to survive a close stumping call, as Shemaine Campbell collected the ball in front of the stumps, resulting in a no-ball. However, this reprieve did little to change the course of the game. In the very next over, Mostary was stumped off Ramharack’s bowling, giving the offspinner her third wicket and putting Bangladesh further on the back foot.
Middle Order Collapse Seals Bangladesh’s Fate
The middle order for Bangladesh failed to fire, with Afy Fletcher adding to Bangladesh’s misery by picking up two wickets in consecutive deliveries. Fletcher’s double strike came at a crucial time, as Bangladesh was hoping to rebuild after losing their top order. Ramharack’s fourth wicket came when Ritu Moni was caught at deep midwicket, ensuring that any hopes of a late surge from Bangladesh were dashed.
Despite Nigar Sultana’s valiant 39, Bangladesh could only muster 103/8 in their 20 overs. Sultana’s dismissal in the final over, bowled by Hayley Matthews, ended any lingering hopes Bangladesh had of putting up a challenging total.
West Indies Cruise to Victory with Strong Opening Stand
Chasing 104, West Indies’ openers Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor got off to a flying start. Matthews, in particular, dominated the Bangladesh bowlers, finding gaps and taking advantage of loose deliveries. She smashed six boundaries in the PowerPlay, ensuring that the West Indies maintained a healthy run rate throughout the chase.
Taylor, who was dealing with a minor injury, played a supporting role, anchoring the innings as Matthews took the lead in scoring. The pair added 52 runs for the first wicket before Matthews was bowled by Marufa Akter for 34. Despite the loss of Matthews, the West Indies were already well on course to victory.
Dottin Finishes in Style as West Indies Register Comfortable Win
Stafanie Taylor continued batting through her injury but was forced to retire hurt on 27 when West Indies were just 20 runs away from victory. Deandra Dottin, known for her power-hitting, came in and sealed the game in style. She smashed two sixes to finish the match, guiding West Indies to 104/2 in just 12.5 overs, securing an easy eight-wicket victory.
This win not only solidified West Indies’ position at the top of Group B but also provided a much-needed boost to their net run rate, which could prove crucial in the later stages of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Bangladesh Women: 103/8 (Nigar Sultana 39; Karishma Ramharack 4-17)
