IPL 2025: PBKS vs DC Match Abandoned in Dharamsala Amid Border Tensions and Power Outage

Technical Failure and Security Concerns Force Abandonment of IPL Clash
In an unexpected turn of events, the IPL 2025 clash between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC), scheduled at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala, was abandoned mid-game due to escalating India-Pakistan border tensions and a critical technical failure. The match, which had reached the 10.1-over mark with PBKS batting at 122/1, was halted at 21:29 IST after multiple floodlight towers failed.
Power Outage Halts Game, Safety Measures Trigger Evacuation
According to an official statement released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the fixture had to be called off due to a “significant technical failure” linked to a localized power outage. The malfunction of three light towers plunged the stadium into darkness, prompting match officials to suspend play and prioritize safety.
“Due to a power outage in the area, one of the light towers at the HPCA stadium malfunctioned. BCCI regrets the inconvenience caused to in-stadium attendees,” the board stated.
The situation escalated further when both players and spectators were evacuated as a safety precaution. Reports confirm that team members, coaches, and their families were safely escorted to their hotels. The local authorities and HPCA officials coordinated a controlled evacuation, avoiding panic but emphasizing urgency due to unfolding events just 200 kilometers away in Jammu, where military activity had intensified.

Local Authorities Intervene, BCCI Reviews Future Matches
Government Directive Leads to Match Abandonment
While there was no public announcement via the stadium PA system, eyewitnesses and Cricbuzz sources stated that security personnel moved systematically through the stands, guiding fans to the exits. A team insider confirmed, “There is no rush or panic… the cops came and asked everyone to move slowly towards the exits.”
It is understood that the Himachal Pradesh government requested the evacuation due to the deteriorating security climate. The decision came hours after reports surfaced about heightened military operations near the border. Although there was no direct threat to the stadium, the administration prioritized preventive safety.
Special Travel Arrangements in Place for IPL Contingent
In response to the event, BCCI has reportedly begun organizing a special train from Dharamsala to Delhi to facilitate the secure movement of players, their families, match officials, broadcasters, and other crew members. The logistical pivot underscores the seriousness of the situation and the league’s proactive crisis response.
Impact on Future IPL Matches and Ongoing Reviews
IPL Chairman: “We Are Monitoring the Situation Closely”
Speaking to media outlets, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed that discussions are ongoing with government authorities. He stressed that the league will prioritize stakeholder safety and await directives before proceeding with upcoming matches, including the high-profile clash between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
“We are reviewing the situation right now. It is an evolving situation. We haven’t received any directive from the government. Obviously, the decision will be taken keeping all the logistics in mind,” Dhumal told PTI.
Despite the uncertainty, the May 9 LSG vs RCB match in Lucknow is still on schedule. However, any changes will depend on further developments and state or central advisories.
Match Relocation Already in Effect
Earlier in the day, the May 11 PBKS fixture against Mumbai Indians had already been moved from Dharamsala to Ahmedabad due to concerns over regional stability. This indicates that the league was already considering operational changes before Thursday’s disruption.
Cricket Australia Monitoring the Situation for Player Safety
Cricket Australia (CA) issued a statement Friday morning confirming it is in constant communication with key stakeholders, including the BCCI, PCB, and the Australian government, to ensure the safety of Australian players and staff in the region.
“We continue to closely monitor the situation in Pakistan and India, including obtaining regular advice and updates from the Australian Government, the PCB, BCCI and local government authorities,” CA said.
