IPL 2025 Injury Update: Uncertainty Over Bumrah’s Return, Samson Nearing Clearance

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 approaches, several star cricketers are awaiting final clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Among them, Jasprit Bumrah, Sanju Samson, Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Avesh Khan are undergoing fitness evaluations to secure their participation in IPL Season 18.

While Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson is expected to receive clearance soon, uncertainty looms over Mumbai Indians’ premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are also closely monitoring the fitness progress of their three key pacers: Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Avesh Khan.

Bumrah’s Fitness: Will He Return in IPL 2025?

The Indian Pacer’s Ongoing Recovery

Jasprit Bumrah, who suffered a back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year, has been undergoing intense rehabilitation at the NCA in Bengaluru. The Indian pace spearhead has already missed several months of action, and his return to competitive cricket remains uncertain.

According to sources, outgoing BCCI Sports Science chief Nitin Patel is personally overseeing Bumrah’s rehabilitation. The pacer, who underwent back surgery in early 2023, is being monitored closely, and a final decision on his IPL availability is expected by the end of March.

Potential Return for Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, will play their first game on March 23 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Chennai. However, Bumrah is unlikely to feature in that clash or the subsequent away fixture against Gujarat Titans (GT) on March 29. There is a possibility that he could be available for MI’s first home game on March 31 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), but it is still uncertain.

With Bumrah’s fitness status unclear, MI may have to rely on their backup pace options for the early part of the season.

Sanju Samson Nears Full Clearance for IPL 2025

Fitness Test Almost Cleared

Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson, who sustained a right index finger fracture during India’s T20I series against England, has made significant progress in his recovery. He has already cleared the fitness test for batting, but he still needs to undergo further assessments for his wicketkeeping ability.

Sources indicate that the NCA will conduct additional tests in the next few days before granting him full or partial clearance. The Royals, however, have a backup in place—Dhruv Jurel, who has already impressed as a wicketkeeper for the national team.

Rajasthan Royals’ Opening Clash

The Rajasthan Royals are set to open their IPL 2025 campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on March 23 in Hyderabad. Whether Samson will take the field as captain and wicketkeeper remains to be seen.

Lucknow Super Giants Await Clearance for Key Pacers

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are also awaiting fitness updates on three of their crucial fast bowlers:

  • Mayank Yadav (Back stress, out since October 2024)
  • Avesh Khan (Knee cartilage issues, undergoing rehabilitation)
  • Mohsin Khan (Injury details undisclosed)

Mayank Yadav & Avesh Khan’s Recovery Progress

Mayank Yadav has been out of action since October 2024 due to a back issue, while Avesh Khan has been recovering from knee cartilage problems. Avesh took injections for the issue after playing Madhya Pradesh’s last Ranji Trophy game against Kerala in January and has been undergoing rehab at the NCA ever since.

Mystery Around Mohsin Khan’s Injury

Little is known about Mohsin Khan’s condition. The left-arm pacer last played in a domestic game on December 31, 2024, in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. During that match between Uttar Pradesh and Chandigarh, he bowled just 5.5 overs before disappearing from competitive cricket.

With LSG set to face Delhi Capitals in Visakhapatnam on March 24, the franchise hopes to get at least two of these pacers cleared before the season begins.
