India Set to Play Bangladesh in Women’s Asia Cup 2024 Semi-Final; Pakistan and Sri Lanka Advance

Hosts Sri Lanka and Bangladesh secured their spots in the semifinals of the Women’s Asia Cup T20 tournament with convincing wins over Thailand and Malaysia on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka delivered a dominant performance, defeating Thailand by 10 wickets in their final group stage match. Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Bangladesh showcased their strength by defeating Malaysia by a hefty margin of 114 runs at the same venue.

In the first game, Bangladesh set a formidable total of 191 for 2, driven by stellar performances from opener Murshida Khatun and captain Nigar Sultana. Khatun scored a brilliant 80 off 59 balls, while Sultana contributed 62 off 37 balls. The innings was anchored by a solid opening partnership of 65 runs between Khatun and wicket-keeper Dilara Akter, who scored 33. Khatun and Sultana then added 89 runs for the second wicket, laying a strong foundation for Bangladesh’s impressive total.

Bangladesh Defeats Malaysia Ahead of Sri Lanka’s Victory

Bangladesh secured their spot in the semifinals by decisively defeating Malaysia, restricting them to a total of 77 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs. This solid performance ensured their advancement in the tournament.

In the final group stage match, Thailand, after choosing to bat first, could only manage to score 93 for 7. Nannapat Koncharoenkai emerged as Thailand’s top scorer with a well-crafted 47 off 53 balls.

For Sri Lanka, off-spinner Kavisha Dilhari delivered a standout bowling performance, taking 2 wickets for just 13 runs. Sri Lanka’s chase was smooth and effortless, thanks to unbeaten innings from skipper Chamari Athapaththu (49 not out) and Vishmi Gunaratne (39), who guided their team to victory with ease. The Thai bowlers were unable to pose any significant challenge, allowing the Sri Lankan openers to cruise to a comfortable win.

Looking ahead to the semifinals, the defending champions India will face Bangladesh, while Sri Lanka will go up against Pakistan on Friday.
