India End Edgbaston Drought with Record Win to Level Series 1-1

Akash Deep’s Historic 10-Wicket Haul Leads India to Emphatic Victory

India registered a thumping 336-run win over England in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham — their biggest Test win by runs away from home and the first-ever victory for an Asian team at this venue. The five-day contest saw career-defining performances, particularly from Akash Deep, who finished with match figures of 10 for 187, including a brilliant 6 for 99 in the second innings. India’s win not only leveled the series 1-1 but also broke an eight-match winless streak at this ground.

Gill, Akash Shine as India Assert Dominance

India were put into bat and responded with a towering 587 in the first innings, powered by captain Shubman Gill’s majestic 269, the highest score by an Indian Test captain. He stitched together crucial partnerships — a 203-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja (89) and a 144-run partnership with Washington Sundar (62) — after early inroads by the England bowlers. Contributions from Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Rishabh Pant (65 in the second innings) bolstered India’s total across both innings.

England Fight Back, But India Stay Ahead

Despite slipping to 84/5, England responded strongly through a resilient 303-run stand between Jamie Smith (184*) and Harry Brook (158), closing their first innings at 407. Mohammad Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/88) shared the spoils for India. With a 180-run lead, India batted again, and Gill once more anchored the innings with a fine 161. The visitors declared at 427/6 in the final session of Day 4, setting England a daunting target of 608 runs.

Day 5 Drama: Rain, Resistance, and a Rampage

The final day began with a delay due to rain, pushing the start time back by over 90 minutes. England resumed at 121/3 but quickly lost momentum as Akash Deep dismissed Ollie Pope and trapped Harry Brook LBW early in the session. Prasidh Krishna provided consistent support, keeping the pressure from the other end.

Stokes-Smith Partnership Briefly Resists

Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith put up a brief resistance, navigating spin and pace before Washington Sundar removed Stokes LBW just before lunch. Post-lunch, Smith reached his half-century and attacked Akash with some aggressive strokeplay, including a couple of sixes. But Akash responded brilliantly by dismissing Smith for 88, registering his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

India Wrap Up England in Style

Prasidh Krishna and Ravindra Jadeja joined the wicket-taking party, with Siraj also grabbing a sharp catch at midwicket to dismiss Josh Tongue. Akash Deep returned to clean up Brydon Carse and completed his 10-wicket match haul when Shubman Gill took a well-judged catch in the deep. With England bowled out for 271, India sealed a memorable win by 336 runs.
