Tragic News: England Cricket Icon Graham Thorpe Passes Away at 55

In a deeply saddening update, former England cricketer Graham Thorpe has passed away at the age of 55. The news of his death, which occurred on the morning of August 5, 2024, was confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) through an official press release.

Graham Thorpe, born in 1969 in Surrey, made a significant impact on the cricketing world. Over his distinguished career, he played 100 Test matches and 82 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for England. Thorpe made his international debut in 1993 and continued to represent England until his retirement from the sport in 2005.

During his career, Thorpe accumulated nearly 9,000 runs, including 16 centuries in Test matches. His contributions to the game have left an enduring legacy in the world of cricket.

In a statement released by the ECB, they expressed their profound sorrow, saying, “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Graham Thorpe, MBE. Words seem inadequate to convey the profound shock and grief we feel over Graham’s death.”

The press release continued, “The cricket community is in mourning today. Our deepest sympathies are with his wife Amanda, his children, his father Geoff, and all his family and friends during this incredibly challenging time. Graham’s exceptional contributions to the sport will always be remembered.”

The unexpected news of Graham Thorpe’s passing has left the cricketing world in disbelief. Both the ECB and Surrey Cricket County have paid heartfelt tributes to their legendary player. Thorpe made an indelible mark on Surrey Cricket, amassing 21,937 runs in First-Class cricket, including 49 centuries, and maintaining an impressive average of 45.04.

Oli Slipper, Chair of Surrey Cricket Club, expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “Graham is one of Surrey’s greatest sons, and it is with profound sadness that we acknowledge he will no longer walk through the gates of The Oval. As a legend of Surrey, he brought immense pride to the Club, representing both the Three Feathers and the Three Lions with distinction. His remarkable contributions as a cricketer and as a person will be greatly missed.”
