Gill, Siraj Unlikely to Feature in India’s Asia Cup 2025 Squad

The Indian selectors are set to convene in Mumbai on Tuesday (August 19) to finalize the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, and early indications suggest that some big names may miss out. Despite their recent stellar performances, Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj are reportedly on the verge of being excluded from the 15-member squad.
Gill’s Exclusion Despite Red-Hot Form
Shubman Gill has been in the form of his life, amassing over 750 runs in the England Test series, second only to Sunil Gavaskar’s historic aggregate in a series. He also had an outstanding IPL season with 650 runs, mostly as an opener.
However, the Asia Cup’s T20 format may work against him. With the selectors leaning toward the successful opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, Gill may not find a place in the starting lineup.
Competition for the Backup Opener Spot
There is space for a third opener in the squad, and Gill’s name will inevitably come up during discussions. But Yashasvi Jaiswal appears to be the frontrunner for that role. The left-hander has been consistent in the shortest format and seems to have the edge. At this stage, there is even a possibility that neither Gill nor Jaiswal will be picked, unless Gautam Gambhir strongly advocates for the Test skipper’s inclusion.
Siraj Faces Stiff Competition in the Bowling Unit
Mohammed Siraj, who finished as the leading wicket-taker in the England series, is also in danger of missing out. Despite his fiery spells and ability to swing the new ball, the pace attack looks crowded.
Bumrah to Lead the Attack
Jasprit Bumrah, widely regarded as the best fast bowler in world cricket, will spearhead India’s attack. He is expected to be supported by Arshdeep Singh, with Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana being in contention for the remaining slots.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya, who bowled the decisive final over in the T20 World Cup, adds balance to the side. However, Mohammed Shami, who played India’s last T20I against England, is unlikely to return.
Middle Order and Spin Options
The middle-order batting unit is expected to feature Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rinku Singh, with an additional slot open. Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar are contenders, but Shreyas Iyer, despite leading Punjab Kings to the IPL final, may not make the cut.
Jitesh Sharma is the favorite to claim the second wicketkeeper’s role.
Strong Spin Department
India’s spin department looks settled with Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, and vice-captain Axar Patel forming the core. Washington Sundar also remains a likely inclusion, given his recent T20I involvement.
Key Talking Point Ahead of the Asia Cup
The Asia Cup, scheduled for September 9-28, 2025, is a crucial preparatory tournament before the World T20. The decision to possibly leave out Gill and Siraj underscores the selectors’ preference for a more format-specific squad rather than simply rewarding current form.

The final squad announcement on Tuesday will settle the debate, but the exclusion of two of India’s most consistent performers, Gill and Siraj, could spark major discussions among fans and pundits. With the Asia Cup serving as a vital testing ground before global tournaments, every selection choice will be scrutinized closely.
