Former India Spinner Dilip Doshi Passes Away at 77 in London

Indian Cricket Mourns the Loss of a Left-Arm Spin Legend
London, June 23 – Former Indian cricketer and veteran left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi passed away in London on Monday at the age of 77. A close family friend confirmed the news, stating that the former cricketer died peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Doshi is survived by his wife Kalindi, son Nayan Doshi—a former domestic cricketer—and daughter Visakha.
Widely regarded as one of India’s most respected left-arm spinners, Doshi represented the country in 33 Test matches and 15 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) between 1979 and 1983. Despite making his international debut relatively late—at the age of 32—Doshi left a lasting impact with both his sharp turn and composed demeanor on the field.
A Late Bloomer with a Long-Lasting Impact
From Domestic Dominance to International Recognition
Born in Rajkot, Dilip Rasiklal Doshi began his first-class career in the 1968-69 season. His domestic achievements laid the foundation for his India call-up more than a decade later. Representing Bengal and Saurashtra, Doshi featured in 238 first-class matches, amassing 898 wickets, including 43 five-wicket hauls and six 10-wicket match performances.
When he finally donned the India cap in 1979, Doshi made up for lost time. In Tests, he scalped 114 wickets, including six five-fors, becoming a dependable asset for India during a transitional phase in spin bowling.
In ODIs, Doshi remained effective in the limited opportunities he received, picking up 22 wickets in just 15 matches. His old-school control and classical spin style offered a unique contrast to the emerging fast-paced cricket landscape of the early 1980s.
Tributes Pour In for the Gentleman Cricketer
Remembering Doshi’s Legacy On and Off the Field
One of the most heartfelt tributes came from Sir Garfield Sobers, the West Indian cricketing legend, who once remarked:
“Dilip Doshi has an immeasurable knowledge to pass on to those who want to follow his path into professional cricket. He has played at all levels over the world and there can be no one more qualified to talk about the art of spin bowling.”
His influence extended beyond numbers. Known for his calm temperament, Doshi mentored many young cricketers even after retirement. His dedication to the sport and unwavering integrity earned him admiration across generations.
Niranjan Shah, former BCCI secretary, said:
“It is an extremely painful and personal loss for me. Dilip was not only one of the legendary cricketers but also one of the finest human beings I have ever known.”
Jaydev Shah, President of the Saurashtra Cricket Association, added a deeply personal note:
“His legacy, both as a player and a person, will continue to live in our hearts. He was not just a cricketer—he was my uncle, my mentor, and someone I looked up to throughout my life.”
Cricket Fraternity Pays Respects
The Indian cricket community, including former teammates, domestic associations, and fans, have taken to social media and press releases to express their condolences. A moment of silence is expected at upcoming domestic fixtures to honor Doshi’s memory.
