Career Highlights and Achievements

Dawid Malan has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, according to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Wednesday, August 28. Over his distinguished career, Malan amassed a total of 1,892 runs in T20 Internationals (62 matches), 1,450 runs in One Day Internationals (30 games), and 1,074 runs in Test matches (22 appearances). Notably, he is only the second English batter, following Jos Buttler, to have achieved a century in all three formats of international cricket.

Memorable Moments and Records

Malan’s career began with a spectacular debut in a T20I against South Africa in 2017, where he made an impressive 78 off just 44 balls. Although his Test career started soon after, his performances were inconsistent. However, during the 2017-18 Ashes series, he scored his sole Test century at the WACA Ground in Perth, amidst England’s 4-0 defeat by Australia.

In T20 Internationals, Malan established himself as a key player for England. In 2020, he reached the top of the ICC Men’s T20I Rankings, securing the No. 1 spot. A few months later, in 2021, he became the fastest player to accumulate 1,000 T20I runs, achieving this milestone in just 24 innings. Malan was also a vital member of the England squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2022.

Reflections on Career and Support

Reflecting on his career in an interview with the Times, the 37-year-old expressed his disappointment with his Test performances, noting that he had not been recalled to the Test squad since the fifth Ashes Test at Hobart in 2022. Despite this, he took pride in his achievements in limited-overs formats. “Growing up, Test cricket was always the ultimate goal for me. While I had some good performances, I was often inconsistent, which was disheartening because I believed I was capable of more. On the other hand, I exceeded my own expectations in the white-ball formats,” Malan shared.

Malan also praised his former captain, Eoin Morgan, for his unwavering support and confidence. “Eoin was exceptional at ignoring external criticism and publicly backing me. If there were any issues with my game, he would be the first to address them,” Malan said.

Malan concludes his international career, having last represented England in November 2023 during their match against Pakistan in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
