Brian Bennett Ruled Out with Concussion in SA vs ZIM Test, Prince Masvaure Named Replacement

Zimbabwe Suffer Setback as Bennett Withdraws from Bulawayo Test
Zimbabwe have suffered a blow in their opening Test against South Africa at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, as promising young opener Brian Bennett has been ruled out for the remainder of the match after being diagnosed with a mild concussion. The injury occurred on June 29 during Zimbabwe’s first innings, when Bennett was struck on the helmet by a sharp bouncer from Kwena Maphaka.
Following the incident, Prince Masvaure has been brought in as a concussion substitute, marking his 10th Test appearance for Zimbabwe. As per ICC concussion protocols, Bennett will take no further part in the game.
“Brian Bennett will play no further part in the ongoing Test match against South Africa after being diagnosed with a mild concussion,” Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed via an official media statement.
Blow to the Helmet During Early Innings
Incident Occurred in the Sixth Over of Zimbabwe’s First Innings
Bennett, who had made a confident start to his innings with a score of 19 off 25 balls, was looking to anchor Zimbabwe’s response when he attempted a pull shot off Maphaka in the sixth over. The delivery rose sharply, and Bennett failed to connect cleanly, resulting in a direct hit to his helmet.
Following immediate attention from the team physio and an on-field concussion assessment, Bennett was cleared to continue. However, after facing just three more balls from Codi Yusuf in the next over, he appeared uncomfortable and chose to walk off the field.
An earlier incident in 2022 involving Zimbabwe opener Takudzwanashe Kaitano suffering a similar concussion shows the importance of adhering strictly to head injury protocols.
ICC’s Concussion Protocol in Action
Under ICC regulations introduced in 2019, teams are allowed to name a like-for-like concussion substitute who can replace an injured player in the same role for the remainder of the match. Zimbabwe acted swiftly and named left-handed batter Prince Masvaure as Bennett’s replacement.
Masvaure, a reliable top-order option, brings experience to the side and has previously contributed with the bat in tough conditions. His inclusion could provide much-needed stability to Zimbabwe’s lineup, especially given South Africa’s pace attack on a lively Bulawayo surface.
Zimbabwe Cricket’s Official Statement
Zimbabwe Cricket’s media release stated:
“Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett will play no further part in the ongoing Test match against South Africa at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo after being diagnosed with a mild concussion. As per concussion protocols, he will take no further part in the match. Prince Masvaure has been named as his replacement, making his 10th appearance in Test cricket.”
This setback is significant, as Bennett is considered one of Zimbabwe’s most promising young cricketers, known for his aggressive style and composure at the crease.
South Africa Maintain Pressure in Opening Test
South Africa, boasting a strong pace unit led by Kwena Maphaka and Codi Yusuf, have kept Zimbabwe under sustained pressure. The hosts were already on the back foot when Bennett exited, and his absence only adds to Zimbabwe’s challenges as they attempt to match South Africa’s first-innings total.
As Zimbabwe now look to rebuild, all eyes will be on Masvaure and the middle order to provide resistance against a disciplined South African attack.
Safety First as Concussion Awareness Grows
Brian Bennett’s withdrawal serves as a critical reminder of the seriousness of head injuries in modern cricket. The prompt diagnosis and substitution in accordance with ICC’s concussion rules reflect the game’s growing emphasis on player safety and medical diligence.
Zimbabwe will be hoping for a quick recovery for their young opener, while Masvaure will aim to seize this unexpected opportunity in the national setup.
