BPL 2025 Likely to Be Postponed Due to General Elections, Confirms Chairman Mahbub Anam

Shift from Traditional December-January Window Under Consideration
The upcoming edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is expected to be postponed from its regular December-January window to May 2025. This decision, still pending final confirmation, is influenced by preparations for Bangladesh’s upcoming general elections scheduled for early 2026.
The announcement came from BPL Chairman Mahbub Anam following an emergency meeting of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) directors at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on July 10. Anam stated that the board is waiting on a final decision from the government before officially confirming the new tournament window.
Election Preparations Impacting Cricket Calendar
The possible shift was triggered by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’ directive to all concerned agencies to be fully prepared for elections by December. In light of this development, the BCB is now exploring alternative slots for hosting the tournament, with May 2025 being the most feasible option.
“BPL may be moved to a different time slot. We are considering holding it before December or in May,” Anam said.

BCB Opens EOI for Sports Marketing Consultancy
The BCB has invited Expressions of Interest (EOI) from experienced sports marketing consultancy firms to manage the upcoming editions of the BPL. Mahbub Anam emphasized that priority will be given to companies with proven experience organizing international T20 leagues.
He acknowledged past mistakes in hiring inexperienced firms, which resulted in operational inefficiencies and affected the league’s image.
“We want experienced agencies that have managed international T20 leagues and possess competent staff. The previous mistakes won’t be repeated,” he said.
Plans for Venue Expansion Underway
Currently, BPL matches are held across three venues: Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet. Anam revealed that the BCB is actively working to expand the tournament’s reach by considering four additional venues: Bogura, Khulna, Barisal, and Rajshahi.
All potential venues are currently undergoing audits to determine whether they meet International Cricket Council (ICC) standards, including adequate accommodations for players and staff.
“Bogura and Khulna stadiums are under review. Renovation is ongoing at Barisal, and Rajshahi is being assessed by the National Sports Council,” said Anam.
New Five-Year BPL Cycle and Franchise Interest
Mahbub Anam also confirmed that several companies have expressed interest in being part of the next BPL cycle, which is expected to span five years. However, assessments will begin only after the BCB finalizes its new financial model for the league.
“There is significant interest from corporate houses, but only those aligned with the new model will be considered,” he added.
The BCB also plans to engage directly with corporate entities to improve sponsorship, visibility, and overall brand value of the BPL.
