BCCI to Hold Special General Meeting on March 1 to Elect Joint Secretary

Mumbai to Host BCCI’s Special General Meeting
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially scheduled a Special General Meeting (SGM) on March 1, 2025, in Mumbai to elect its new joint secretary. This decision comes after the position became vacant when Devjit Saikia was elevated to the role of BCCI secretary, replacing Jay Shah last month.
According to BCCI’s constitution, any vacancy in key positions must be filled within 45 days, prompting the board to convene the SGM. The meeting will take place at BCCI headquarters, with the election scheduled for 12 noon.
BCCI’s Compliance with Statutory Requirements
As per BCCI’s governing regulations, a 21-day notice period is required before convening an SGM. On behalf of Secretary Devjit Saikia, a BCCI official sent out notices to state cricket associations on February 6, ensuring compliance with procedural formalities.
This marks the second SGM in two months, with the previous meeting held on January 12, 2025, during which both Devjit Saikia (secretary) and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia (treasurer) were elected unopposed.
Likely Outcome: A Consensus Candidate from West Zone
Minimal Competition Expected for Joint Secretary Role
Given the nature of BCCI elections, sources indicate that a unanimous selection is likely, similar to previous office-bearer appointments. Reports suggest that the new joint secretary is expected to be chosen from the West Zone, maintaining the zonal representation structure traditionally followed in BCCI governance.
A formal consensus among stakeholders will likely be reached before the nomination deadline, preventing any potential contest for the position.
BCCI’s Recent Administrative Changes and Upcoming Plans
With Devjit Saikia’s elevation and the appointment of Prabhtej Singh Bhatia as treasurer, BCCI has undergone significant administrative changes in 2025. This SGM aims to further streamline the leadership team ahead of several major cricketing events in the coming months.
With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on the horizon and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 approaching, the board is keen on ensuring a stable and effective leadership structure.
