Ravichandran Ashwin Fined for Dissent During TNPL Match Against Tiruppur Tamizhans

Veteran Spinner Sanctioned for On-Field Outburst After Controversial LBW Call
Ravichandran Ashwin, the former India all-rounder and current captain of the Dindigul Dragons, has been fined 30% of his match fee following an on-field outburst during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) match against the Tiruppur Tamizhans on Sunday, June 8. The incident occurred at the Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science Cricket Ground in Coimbatore and involved Ashwin expressing dissent over an LBW decision.
The Incident: Controversial LBW Sparks Ashwin’s Frustration
Ashwin was adjudged LBW to left-arm spinner R. Sai Kishore after attempting an aggressive sweep shot. The delivery appeared to pitch outside the leg stump, leading to widespread debate among viewers and a visibly agitated response from Ashwin. Having already used both of his team’s reviews on wide-ball calls, Ashwin had no opportunity to challenge the decision.
A clip of the incident quickly went viral across social media platforms. Ashwin was seen remonstrating with the umpire Kritika and later expressing his frustration by hitting his pads with his bat and flinging his gloves while walking off. The official TNPL website’s commentary made no reference to dissent, simply stating, “4.5: Ravichandran Ashwin’s aggressive sweep attempt against a good-length delivery outside leg results in an lbw decision.”

Match Referee Hearing and Penalty Breakdown
Following the match, a hearing was conducted by TNPL match referee Arjun Kripal Singh. According to a TNPL official, “Ashwin was fined 10% for showing dissent towards the umpires and 20% for misuse of equipment. He accepted the sanctions.” Ashwin has not publicly commented on the decision as of yet.
This incident highlights the TNPL’s ongoing commitment to maintaining discipline and upholding the spirit of the game. Such behavior, especially from senior players, is carefully scrutinized as the league seeks to foster professionalism and sportsmanship.
Impact on Match and Team Performance
Ashwin had scored a brisk 18 off 11 balls, which included two boundaries and a six, before his dismissal left Dindigul Dragons at 39/1 in the fifth over. His wicket triggered a dramatic collapse, with the team losing their remaining nine wickets for just 54 runs. Tiruppur Tamizhans chased the 94-run target with ease, reaching the total with nine wickets in hand and 49 balls to spare.
Currently, Dindigul Dragons sit fifth on the TNPL 2025 points table, having won one and lost one of their two matches. The league, now in its ninth edition, kicked off on June 6 and will continue until July 6.
