Ashleigh Gardner Named Captain of Gujarat Giants Ahead of WPL 2025

Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner has been appointed the new captain of Gujarat Giants for the upcoming season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025. The announcement came on Wednesday, February 5, following a decision to replace Beth Mooney as captain after two challenging seasons for the franchise.
Leadership Change for Gujarat Giants
Beth Mooney, the former captain, led the team during a tough period where the Giants finished at the bottom of the table for two consecutive seasons. The franchise hopes that Gardner’s leadership can help turn things around for the team. Mooney will remain an integral part of the squad, focusing on her role as a wicketkeeper and opening batter while continuing to provide leadership support.
Ashleigh Gardner’s Performance and Vision
Ashleigh Gardner has been one of the top performers for the Gujarat Giants over the past two seasons. She has scored 324 runs and taken 17 wickets across the WPL, proving her worth as a key all-rounder. Gardner expressed her excitement at the opportunity to lead the team and highlighted the depth of talent in the squad.
“It is an absolute honour for me to be named the captain of Gujarat Giants,” Gardner said. “I have loved being a part of this team and am excited to lead this fantastic group. We have a great mix of young and experienced players and plenty of Indian talent in our squad. I am looking forward to working with the team and making our fans proud.”
Support from the Coaching Staff
Michael Klinger, the head coach of Gujarat Giants, praised Gardner’s competitive nature and leadership skills. He described her as a fierce competitor with excellent game awareness and tactical acumen.

“She is a fierce competitor. Her game awareness, tactical acumen, and ability to inspire players make her the ideal choice to captain Gujarat Giants. We believe she will lead from the front and guide the team towards a successful campaign,” said Klinger.
Klinger also emphasized that Beth Mooney will continue to play a crucial role in the team.
“I would like to thank Mooney for her highly valued leadership. Now, she will be able to focus on wicketkeeping and opening the batting lineup. She continues to be a major leader of our group.”
Gujarat Giants’ Squad for WPL 2025
During the December auction, the Gujarat Giants strengthened their squad by purchasing four new players, including Indian all-rounder Simran Shaikh. They also retained the services of Deandra Dottin, who is expected to play a vital role in the upcoming season.
The team aims to deliver a much-improved performance under Gardner’s captaincy and is optimistic about achieving better results in WPL 2025.
Looking Ahead
With Ashleigh Gardner at the helm and a blend of experienced international stars and promising Indian talent, the Gujarat Giants have high hopes for a turnaround this season. Fans eagerly await the start of the WPL, where the team will look to make a strong statement.
