Self-Belief and Resilience: Trott Applauds Afghanistan’s Growing Confidence After Stunning Win Over England

Afghanistan’s Thrilling Victory Over England in ICC ODI Event

Afghanistan once again proved their mettle on the big stage, securing a dramatic victory over England in an ICC ODI event. The win, which head coach Jonathan Trott described as a testament to the team’s self-belief and resilience, has further boosted their confidence as they prepare for their upcoming clash against Australia.

Ibrahim Zadran’s Record-Breaking Knock Powers Afghanistan to 325

A Roller-Coaster Start and a Strong Finish

Afghanistan’s innings started on a shaky note, as they found themselves struggling at 39/3 after the powerplay. However, a record-breaking performance from Ibrahim Zadran turned the tide in their favor. His sensational 177 off 146 balls – the highest individual score for Afghanistan in ODIs – laid the foundation for a massive total.

Zadran received valuable support from the middle order, with crucial contributions from Hashmatullah Shahidi (51), Azmatullah Omarzai (41), and Mohammad Nabi (42 off 27 balls). The innings was a story of acceleration, with partnerships flourishing at key moments:

  • 103-run stand between Zadran and Shahidi in 124 balls stabilized the innings.
  • 72-run partnership between Zadran and Omarzai in 63 balls picked up the pace.
  • 111-run stand between Zadran and Nabi in just 55 balls powered Afghanistan past 300.

With 113 runs coming off the final 10 overs, Afghanistan posted a formidable total of 325/6.

Trott Lauds Zadran and Afghanistan’s Batting Approach

Speaking about the batting effort, Jonathan Trott praised the composure and quality displayed by his players.

“To be able to get to 325 after being 39 for 3 just showed the quality of Ibrahim as a player. He was well-supported by Azmat and Nabi, which allowed him to accelerate without even realizing it,” said Trott.

He further highlighted Zadran’s stroke play, especially his spectacular straight six off Jofra Archer, which showcased his confidence and form.

Joe Root’s Heroics Keep England in the Hunt

Chasing 326, England also had a rough start, losing early wickets. However, Joe Root led the resistance, playing a classic knock filled with composure and technique. His century – the first since June 2019 in ODIs – kept England in contention.

Root built partnerships with the middle order, ensuring that England remained in the hunt despite Afghanistan consistently chipping away at wickets.

Omarzai’s Brilliance Seals Afghanistan’s Win

With 39 runs required off 26 balls, Root fell to Azmatullah Omarzai, shifting momentum in Afghanistan’s favor. The match reached a thrilling climax when England needed 13 off the final over, with Adil Rashid and Mark Wood at the crease.

Bowling under pressure, Omarzai delivered a masterful last over, conceding only singles before picking up the final wicket to script Afghanistan’s famous victory. This win not only knocked England out of semifinal contention but also reinforced Afghanistan’s rise as a competitive force in world cricket.

England’s Struggles: Buttler Points to Death Bowling and Injuries

England’s Bowling Falters in the Final Overs

England captain Jos Buttler acknowledged that his team failed to capitalize on early breakthroughs. Despite reducing Afghanistan to 39/3, England conceded 113 runs in the final 10 overs, which proved to be the decisive factor.

“We started great, but credit to Ibrahim. He played a fantastic innings. We just couldn’t find a way to break partnerships, and conceding 113 in the last 10 overs was too many,” Buttler admitted.

Injury Concerns Add to England’s Woes

Adding to England’s problems was Mark Wood’s knee issue, which restricted him to just eight overs. This forced England to use Joe Root and Liam Livingstone in the crucial 47th and 50th overs. While Livingstone bowled a brilliant final over, Root’s over yielded 23 runs, handing Afghanistan the much-needed momentum.

“Injuries happen at the worst times. Losing Mark forced us to rethink our strategy, and that made things difficult,” Buttler said.

What’s Next for Afghanistan? Focus on Australia

Despite the celebrations, Trott emphasized the importance of staying grounded, reminding his players to shift their focus to the upcoming match against Australia.

“Enjoy tonight, but as soon as they wake up tomorrow, the focus is on Australia,” said Trott.

With growing self-belief and strong performances, Afghanistan is proving to be a formidable force, capable of challenging the best in the world.
