Mahbub Anam Likely to Skip BCB Elections Amid Rising Media Scrutiny

Veteran Cricket Administrator Steps Back

Mahbub Anam, one of Bangladesh cricket’s longest-serving administrators and a current director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), is reportedly set to withdraw from the upcoming board elections scheduled for October.

The move comes as a major surprise in Bangladesh cricket’s administrative circles, particularly because Mahbub has been a fixture in the board’s leadership for over two decades. Many insiders had anticipated that he would contest for the presidency this year, marking a potential shift in BCB’s leadership dynamics.

Media Pressure and Growing Uncertainty

Allegations Spark Doubts Over Participation

With the election dates nearing, Mahbub Anam has faced increasing scrutiny from sections of the media. Some reports have suggested corruption and mismanagement, raising questions about his candidacy.

Speaking to Cricbuzz on Wednesday (August 20), Mahbub hinted at the hostile environment surrounding the elections:

“I have told you earlier that I won’t take part in election unless the environment is good and you know what is happening. What is happening I don’t think it will end anywhere.”

His statement has been interpreted as a clear indication that the veteran administrator is unlikely to contest.

Mahbub Anam’s Long Association with Bangladesh Cricket

From Cricketer to Administrator

Mahbub began his journey in cricket with Mohammedan Sporting Club, one of Bangladesh’s most iconic domestic teams. After retirement, he turned to administration, starting with the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) in 1986.

His breakthrough role came in 2001 when he was elected to the Executive Committee of the then Bangladesh Cricket Control Board (BCCB). Since then, he has held key positions in every administration, barring a brief period when advisory committees temporarily managed cricket operations.

Current Roles in BCB

At present, Mahbub Anam heads the BCB’s Grounds Committee and recently took over as chairman of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Governing Council, replacing former BCB president Faruque Ahmed.

His leadership experience and deep involvement in both domestic and national cricket administration made him a natural candidate for higher office, which is why his expected withdrawal has created waves ahead of the elections.

What This Means for the Upcoming Elections

The BCB elections have historically been high-stakes, with political and sporting influences shaping outcomes. Mahbub’s absence from the contest could open doors for new contenders and significantly alter the race for the presidency.

While his official confirmation is awaited, cricket followers believe that the changing dynamics of Bangladesh cricket governance may see fresh leadership at the helm for the first time in years.
