MS Dhoni to Record Statement as Madras High Court Allows Trial in ₹100 Crore Defamation Case

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is set to appear in court later this year after the Madras High Court granted approval for the trial in his long-pending ₹100 crore defamation case. The case, which Dhoni filed in 2014 against prominent media houses and individuals, stems from allegations linking him to the infamous 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL) betting and spot-fixing scandal.

Madras High Court Clears the Way for Trial

After more than a decade of legal delays, the Madras High Court, on Monday, August 11, 2025, permitted Dhoni to proceed with his defamation suit against Zee Media Corporation, journalist Sudhir Chaudhary, retired IPS officer G. Sampath Kumar, and News Nation Network.

The allegations date back to 2013 when Dhoni was accused of being involved in the betting and spot-fixing scandal that led to the suspension of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) from the IPL for two seasons (2016 and 2017). Dhoni has consistently denied any involvement and sought damages worth ₹100 crore for the reputational harm caused.

Dhoni’s Court Appearance Scheduled for Late 2025

The court has now directed Dhoni to record his statement and undergo cross-examination under oath. In an affidavit filed with the court, Dhoni expressed his readiness to participate in the proceedings between October 20, 2025, and December 10, 2025, ensuring that his availability does not cause further delays.

“The above request is made with the intent to avoid any undue delay… I shall extend my full cooperation with the Advocate Commissioner and comply with all directions issued by this Honourable Court regarding the trial and the recording of evidence,” Dhoni stated, as quoted by The Hindu.

This step marks a significant development in the case, which has been pending since the immediate aftermath of the 2013 IPL scandal.

How the Controversy Unfolded

The 2013 IPL season was marred by revelations of betting and spot-fixing involving players, team officials, and bookies. Investigations by law enforcement agencies found top officials from Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals guilty, resulting in both franchises being suspended for two years.

However, Dhoni’s name surfaced in certain media reports, suggesting he had knowledge of or involvement in the illegal activities. The allegations, aired by television news channels and amplified by statements from retired IPS officer G. Sampath Kumar, deeply angered Dhoni.

Dhoni’s Legal Action Against Media Outlets

In response, Dhoni filed a ₹100 crore defamation lawsuit in 2014, claiming the accusations were baseless and damaging to his personal and professional reputation. He alleged that the media reports not only tarnished his public image but also caused emotional distress and professional setbacks.

The case remained in limbo for years due to procedural delays and legal appeals. The recent decision by the Madras High Court to allow the trial is seen as a breakthrough in Dhoni’s pursuit of justice.

What’s Next?

With the trial set to proceed, Dhoni will have the opportunity to present his side of the story in detail. The proceedings will include cross-examinations and examination of evidence from both sides.

This case also serves as a reminder of the responsibility of media outlets to verify allegations before broadcasting them, especially when it involves high-profile public figures. For more on similar high-profile cricket legal battles, you can read our detailed guide on cricket controversies.
