Unforced Errors Deny India a Deserved Series Win in England Despite Dominance

India’s recently concluded Test series against England ended in a 2-2 draw, but the scoreboard only told part of the story. Statistically, the visitors outperformed England across most departments, yet a combination of unforced errors, dropped catches, and moments of fortune for the hosts denied India a well-earned series victory.
The outcome echoed Virat Kohli’s famous post-series sentiment from 2018, where he felt India’s performance was superior to what the results suggested. Much like the 2021-22 tour, the 2025 edition was fiercely competitive, with small margins defining the final result.
India’s Statistical Supremacy Overshadowed by Key Moments
Throughout the five-Test series, India consistently had the edge in batting and bowling numbers. Indian batters averaged 39.77 compared to England’s 37.57, and the visitors registered 12 centuries to England’s nine.
With the ball, India’s pace attack outperformed England’s both in average (34.95 vs 36.53) and strike rate (50.7 vs 62.8), despite conceding runs at a faster rate due to England’s aggressive ‘Bazball’ strategy. The spin department also fared better, with Indian spinners averaging 55.50 compared to England’s 72.46.
Narrow Margins in First Innings Battles
In three of the five Tests, the difference in first-innings totals was under 25 runs – only the second such instance in history for a series of this length. Two matches were decided by fewer than 25 runs, highlighting just how fine the margins were.

False Shots and Unforced Errors – The Game Changers
One of the most telling stats was the percentage of false responses induced by each bowling attack. India extracted 21% false shots from England batters, compared to just 16% by England’s bowlers. However, where India faltered was in wickets lost to balls they were in control of.
India lost 22 such wickets, compared to England’s nine – a decisive factor in key moments. Costly dismissals like Shubman Gill’s fall to Shoaib Bashir at Headingley and Rishabh Pant’s attacking miscue in the same Test shifted momentum England’s way. Runouts, including Pant’s at Lord’s and Gill’s at The Oval, further dented India’s chances.
Dropped Catches – England’s Slice of Luck
Dropped catches are part of cricket, but in this series, they hurt the better-performing team more. India dropped 23 chances, costing them an estimated 718 additional runs, compared to England’s 17 drops for 587 runs.
England’s Harry Brook, the Player of the Series, was the biggest beneficiary, scoring 240 of his 481 runs after being dropped. His 99 at Leeds came after surviving a no-ball dismissal from Jasprit Bumrah before opening his account.
Other lucky recipients included Jamie Smith (130 additional runs) and Ollie Pope (123). For India, Ravindra Jadeja made the most of a dropped chance in Manchester to score a match-saving hundred, while Yashasvi Jaiswal converted two reprieves into a century at The Oval.

India’s superior numbers in batting, pace bowling, and spin suggested they were the better team across the series. Yet, unforced errors and dropped catches handed England the crucial moments they needed to level the contest.
The 2025 series will be remembered as one where India were “at home” in English conditions but still left wondering what could have been. For England, it extended their run without a series win against India or Australia since 2019 – but they’ll be satisfied with keeping the visitors at bay.
