Robinson, Jacobs and Bowlers Shine as New Zealand Clinch 21-Run Victory Over South Africa in T20I Tri-Series

New Zealand Seal Impressive Win in Harare
In a thrilling encounter of the T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe, New Zealand registered a clinical 21-run win over South Africa in the second match, thanks to a crucial 103-run partnership between Tim Robinson and debutant Bevon Jacobs, followed by a collective bowling performance. Despite an early batting collapse, the Kiwis recovered to post 173/5, and their disciplined bowling attack ensured South Africa were bundled out for 152 in 18.2 overs.
First Innings: Robinson, Jacobs Rebuild After Collapse
Early Setbacks for New Zealand
New Zealand, opting to bat first, got off to a quick start with Tim Seifert setting the tone. He smashed four boundaries in a brief cameo of 22 runs before falling to a slower ball from Lungi Ngidi. Devon Conway, who had faced just one delivery in the first three overs, hit two elegant boundaries but perished trying to attack Kwena Maphaka’s short ball.
The middle order crumbled under pressure. Daryl Mitchell was dismissed trying to pull Gerald Coetzee, and Senuran Muthusamy celebrated his maiden T20I wicket by trapping Mitchell Hay LBW. James Neesham’s short stay was ended by another short delivery from Maphaka, leaving New Zealand reeling at 70/5 inside 10 overs.
Robinson and Jacobs Launch Counterattack
At this precarious point, debutant Bevon Jacobs joined Tim Robinson, and the pair mounted a brilliant recovery. Jacobs confidently took on Ngidi with a towering six, while Robinson reached his half-century with a powerful maximum over deep backward point off Coetzee. They added 103 unbeaten runs for the sixth wicket, with calculated aggression and precise shot selection.
Despite a tight 17th over by Corbin Bosch, the duo plundered 63 runs in the final five overs. Maphaka’s expensive 18th over (which included a six and four wides) proved costly. The final over from Coetzee yielded 19 runs, including a six apiece from both batters, taking New Zealand to a formidable 173/5.
Second Innings: South Africa Falter Despite Promising Start
Strong Start Undone by Middle Order Collapse
South Africa’s chase began in aggressive fashion, with Lhuan-dre Pretorius smashing six boundaries in the powerplay. Reeza Hendricks also showed intent with a boundary off Ish Sodhi. However, Matt Henry ended Pretorius’ fireworks with an edge to the keeper, and Jacob Duffy dismissed Rubin Hermann with a well-directed short ball.
The middle order collapse was swift. Hendricks, Muthusamy, and van der Dussen all departed in quick succession, reducing South Africa to 62/5 by the ninth over. Dewald Brevis tried to revive hopes with a brisk 35, including three sixes, but his effort was cut short by Henry just after the 100-run mark.
Late Resistance Fades Under Pressure
George Linde played a fighting knock, hitting Santner and Sodhi for sixes, and brought the equation down to 38 from the last four overs. However, Neesham’s miserly 17th over tightened the screws. Though Coetzee struck a boundary, Duffy’s double blow – removing Linde and Maphaka – sealed South Africa’s fate. Henry claimed the final wicket of Coetzee as the Proteas were dismissed for 152 in 18.2 overs.
