Sanjog Gupta Appointed New ICC CEO, Set to Lead Global Cricket into a Transformative Era

JioStar Sports Executive to Take Over as ICC’s Seventh CEO Starting July 7, 2025

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially named Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer. Gupta, a prominent name in India’s sports broadcasting and entertainment industry, will assume his new role on July 7, 2025, becoming the seventh CEO in ICC’s history. His appointment follows a highly competitive global recruitment process, highlighting his vast experience and deep-rooted understanding of cricket’s modern ecosystem.

This announcement comes at a pivotal moment for world cricket, with the sport expanding its reach globally and building momentum ahead of its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028.

Sanjog Gupta’s Journey to Global Cricket Leadership

From Journalism to Sports Governance

Gupta brings with him more than two decades of experience across media, entertainment, and sports. He began his professional journey as a journalist before transitioning into the broadcasting world with Star India in 2010. During his tenure, he held several leadership roles, especially in sports content and strategy.

His most impactful contribution came after becoming Head of Sports at Disney Star India in 2020, where he played a pivotal role in transforming sports coverage and expanding cricket’s digital footprint. In 2024, he was appointed CEO of JioStar Sports, the newly formed entity after the Viacom18 and Disney Star merger.

A Vision Backed by ICC Leadership

ICC Chairman Jay Shah welcomed the appointment with high praise, saying:

“Sanjog brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialisation, which will be invaluable for the ICC. His deep understanding of global sports and media landscapes, coupled with a passion for technology and fan engagement, aligns perfectly with our mission to grow cricket globally.”

Shah emphasized the ICC’s goal of “moving beyond traditional boundaries,” citing ambitions such as establishing cricket as an Olympic staple and solidifying the sport’s presence across new and emerging markets.

The Selection Process: A Global Hunt for a Visionary Leader

The selection of Sanjog Gupta followed a rigorous international recruitment process launched in March 2025. The ICC confirmed that they received over 2,500 applications from 25 countries. The HR & Remuneration Committee narrowed the list down to 12 candidates, and a Nominations Committee—comprising ICC Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja, ECB Chair Richard Thompson, SLC President Shammi Silva, and BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia—carried out final evaluations.

Gupta’s name was unanimously recommended to the ICC Board, which approved his appointment with full consensus.
