Naim Sheikh Returns as Bangladesh Names Revamped Squad for Sri Lanka ODI Series

Bangladesh Announce 16-Member Squad with Key Changes for July ODIs
Naim Sheikh has been recalled to Bangladesh’s ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka, marking his return to the format after nearly two years. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) made several key changes to the 16-member squad, reflecting a strategy aimed at balancing youth, form, and fitness as they build towards future tournaments.
The ODI series will be held from July 2 to 8, with the first two matches scheduled in Colombo and the final game set to take place in Pallekele.
Major Inclusions and Omissions in ODI Squad
Litton, Shamim, and Taskin Among Returnees
In addition to Naim, the BCB selection panel led by Gazi Ashraf Hossain has brought back Litton Das, Shamim Hossain Patwary, Tanvir Islam, and Hasan Mahmud into the one-day fold. Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman, both returning from injuries, also find a place in the squad after missing the recent T20I matches.
Ashraf emphasized that Naim’s transformation in batting intent and technique aligned with the team’s requirement for a third opener. “We are seeking someone who can complement the aggressive approach of Tamim Iqbal and Parvez Hossain Emon, and Naim’s improved mindset fits that role,” Ashraf told reporters.

Workload Management and Injury Considerations Shape Bowling Line-Up
Bangladesh has opted for a pace-heavy bowling unit, with five fast bowlers included for the tour. According to Ashraf, this decision was influenced by both workload management and the injury recovery of key bowlers.
Soumya Sarkar and Nasum Ahmed Left Out
Experienced campaigners like Soumya Sarkar and Nasum Ahmed were dropped from the squad. While Soumya missed the Pakistan T20Is earlier, concerns about his recurring back spasm and extended injury layoff affected his chances of making a comeback for the Sri Lanka ODIs. Additionally, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad were not considered, having already retired from ODI cricket.
BCB’s Vision: A Balance Between Youth and Experience
The selection committee’s approach reflects a focus on building a dynamic ODI unit that can withstand transition periods while still staying competitive in the international circuit. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who will lead the squad, represents the new era of leadership being cultivated in Bangladesh cricket.
