Mumbai Indians Eliminate Gujarat Titans with Clinical All-Round Show in High-Scoring Thriller

Rohit Sharma and Bumrah Lead MI to Victory in Must-Win Clash
Mumbai Indians (MI) delivered a commanding all-round performance to knock Gujarat Titans (GT) out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 with a 20-run win in a high-octane match that witnessed a combined 436 runs. Rohit Sharma’s fluent 81 and Jasprit Bumrah’s disciplined spell played key roles in MI defending their imposing total of 228/5 in a do-or-die encounter.
Powerplay Dominance: MI Openers Set the Stage Ablaze
Rohit-Bairstow Duo Dismantles GT’s Bowling Attack
After opting to bat first, MI were off to a blazing start as the opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow unleashed carnage in the powerplay. Scoring 79 without loss, MI registered their best powerplay performance of the season. Bairstow was the initial aggressor, targeting Prasidh Krishna in a brutal over that yielded 26 runs, including three sixes and two fours.
Rohit, who was handed two lifelines early in his innings, grew in confidence and launched a calculated attack on R Sai Kishore. His trio of boundaries in the final over of the powerplay ensured MI had the upper hand early in the innings.
Middle Overs Momentum: Rohit Shines, Yadav Plays Cameo
The middle phase of MI’s innings saw Rohit Sharma anchor proceedings, bringing up a 27-ball fifty and surpassing 7000 IPL runs in the process. Partnering with Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit helped maintain the scoring rate even against GT’s ace spinner Rashid Khan.
Yadav played a brisk cameo, striking back-to-back sixes off Gerald Coetzee, but was dismissed after being dropped earlier. Despite losing Yadav, Rohit’s aggression against the spinners and Tilak Varma’s support ensured that MI remained on course for a big total.
Death Overs Surge: Hardik Pandya Provides the Final Push
A quick collapse saw Rohit and Varma fall in a short span, giving GT a brief window of hope. However, former GT skipper Hardik Pandya ensured MI finished strong. His 22-run final over, laced with three sixes, propelled MI to a formidable total of 228. Only Rashid Khan emerged unscathed for GT with figures of 4-0-31-0.
Gujarat Titans’ Chase: Sudharsan Fights Lone Battle
Powerplay Setback and Recovery
GT’s chase began on a shaky note with skipper Shubman Gill falling to a big inswinger from Trent Boult in the very first over. However, Sai Sudharsan and Kusal Mendis stitched a counter-attacking 64-run stand that kept GT afloat during the powerplay.
Sudharsan’s aggression was evident as he took on Bumrah and Pandya early, while Mendis contributed with some timely boundaries before being dismissed in unusual fashion—hit wicket.
Middle Overs Resistance: Sudharsan and Sundar Stabilize
The middle overs saw a valiant effort from Sudharsan and Washington Sundar. Their 84-run partnership kept GT in the hunt, with Sundar particularly aggressive against Boult, hammering him for back-to-back sixes and a four in a single over.
Sudharsan notched up a well-crafted half-century in just 28 balls, leading GT’s charge. At one stage, the required rate was well within reach, but MI turned to their trump card—Jasprit Bumrah.
Bumrah Strikes Back: Turning Point in the Chase
Bumrah’s return changed the game. Bowling his third over when GT were cruising at nearly 12 runs per over, Bumrah broke the partnership by clean-bowling Sundar with a trademark yorker. This breakthrough disrupted GT’s momentum, pulling the required rate back under control.
In his final over, Bumrah conceded only eight runs despite being struck for a six, finishing with a miserly 4-0-27-1 in a run-fest. His spell proved to be the decisive factor that shifted the game in MI’s favour.

Final Overs: MI Close Out the Game Efficiently
GT needed 47 runs off the final 30 balls with set batter Sudharsan at the crease. However, Gleeson cleaned him up with a clever delivery that beat the scoop attempt. Ashwani Kumar supported Bumrah ably, keeping things tight at the death.
Boult returned to dismiss Sherfane Rutherford in the penultimate over, while Gleeson, despite an injury, started the final over with three dot balls. Ashwani completed the job, sealing a memorable win for MI.
