A Shocking Near-Death Experience in the Waters of Puri
Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president and former cricketer Snehasish Ganguly had a miraculous escape after a terrifying boat accident at Puri Beach. Snehasish and his wife, Arpita, were rescued by lifeguards and local divers after their speedboat capsized in the Bay of Bengal during a high tide incident. The couple, now safely back in Kolkata, recounted their ordeal with deep emotion and gratitude.
The 56-year-old administrator and elder brother of former India captain Sourav Ganguly, described the incident as “life-threatening” and attributed their survival to divine intervention, particularly thanking Lord Jagannath, the presiding deity of Puri.
Unfolding of the Incident: A Trip That Almost Turned Fatal
A Sudden Decision with Unexpected Consequences
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Snehasish shared that visiting Puri had been an annual tradition for over 30 years, including attending rituals at the famed Jagannath Temple. On Saturday evening, however, the Gangulys made a last-minute decision to venture into the sea, unaware of the hazardous conditions prevailing due to high tide.
“I don’t know why I chose to do it. It was spontaneous,” Snehasish recalled.
At approximately 5:30 PM, the couple, accompanied by another duo and onboard lifeguards, set out in a speedboat. But nature had other plans. A massive wave struck, flipping the boat upside down and trapping everyone underneath in the swirling waters.
Rescue and Relief: Trapped but Not Defeated
Fortunately, another wave hit moments later, flipping the boat upright. This critical moment gave the trapped individuals a chance to escape. Local lifeguards and divers, already rushing toward the scene, reached in time to rescue the survivors and brought them safely to shore. The victims, visibly shaken, received first aid on the beach.
“It felt like we were given a second life,” said Ganguly. “The experience was terrifying.”
Local reports confirmed that the vessel involved was a speedboat, commonly used for tourist rides. Onlookers and emergency personnel confirmed the sea conditions were unusually rough, warning of stronger-than-usual tides during the evening.
