Afghan Women Cricketers in Exile: A Story of Hope, Resilience, and Global Support

ICC’s Historic Task Force: A New Dawn for Afghan Women Cricketers

In a landmark move, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the creation of a dedicated task force to assist Afghan women cricketers living in exile. Since the Taliban’s return to power, 25 contracted women cricketers have fled Afghanistan, seeking safety and a future in cricket. Among them, 19 now reside in Australia, continuing their passion under the shadow of displacement.

This initiative marks a pivotal step in acknowledging the plight of Afghan women athletes. Firooza Amiri, one of the exiled cricketers, recently spoke to Cricbuzz about what this task force means for the team. “We are hopeful,” she said. “The inclusion of our representatives and Pitch Our Future gives us a voice in the decisions shaping our future.”

Pitch Our Future: A Beacon of Support and Advocacy

What is Pitch Our Future?

Pitch Our Future serves as the official platform for Afghanistan’s exiled women’s cricket team. Launched to amplify global awareness, it highlights the individual stories of players, promotes their sporting journey, and raises funds for essential needs—training, coaching, equipment, and education.

It plays a crucial role in keeping the athletes visible and their stories alive, with international recognition bringing not just moral support but also tangible resources. According to Amiri, “The belief and support we receive through Pitch Our Future keep us moving forward.”

More Than a Game: A Symbolic Return to the Field

On January 30, 2025, the Afghan women’s team in exile played a match in Australia with Cricket Without Borders. For Amiri and her teammates, it was more than a cricket game—it was a reclaiming of identity. “It was emotional. We were back in Afghan colors, feeling proud and seen,” she said.

This symbolic match represented hope for countless Afghan girls aspiring to dream freely. It was a loud and clear message to the world: Afghan women cricketers may be displaced, but they are not defeated.

Olympic Dreams and a Desire for Recognition

The team remains optimistic about future international representation, including the possibility of participating in the LA Olympics. While no confirmation has yet been received, the players are ready. Their training continues in premier local leagues in Melbourne and Canberra, where they’ve found opportunities to compete and grow.

The Harsh Reality of Exile

Living in exile comes with immense emotional and logistical challenges. Separated from family and homeland, these athletes carry the weight of a shattered past while chasing a brighter future. “We never wanted to leave; we were forced to,” Amiri emphasizes. Yet, their resolve is stronger than ever.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), constrained by political pressures, has not extended any support since the Taliban’s return. None of the women cricketers have been in contact with the ACB, and their recognition on the world stage remains uncertain under the current regime.

The Role of Global Cricket Bodies and the Future Ahead

Organizations like the BCCI, ECB, and Cricket Australia are now stepping up. A dedicated fund has been proposed to support Afghan women cricketers, with Cricket Australia already taking the lead. The exiled players hope these funds will be transparently used for coaching, facilities, and education—key elements for their growth.

Rising from Adversity with Purpose

The story of Afghan women cricketers is one of pain, resilience, and unyielding hope. With support from the ICC, platforms like Pitch Our Future, and the global cricket community, these athletes are turning their exile into a new opportunity to inspire the world.

As they continue to rebuild their lives in foreign lands, their message resonates globally: cricket is not just a sport—it’s a voice, an identity, and a symbol of resistance against oppression.
