BCB Confirms Litton Das to Lead Bangladesh Through Transition Phase
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially appointed Litton Das as the full-time T20I captain until the ICC T20 World Cup next year. The decision, confirmed on Sunday (May 4), follows the resignation of Najmul Hossain Shanto from T20I leadership due to the challenges of managing all formats. This move marks a significant step for Bangladesh as they prepare for a series of international fixtures ahead of the global tournament.
Leadership Restructure Ahead of World Cup Preparation
Litton Das previously captained the national side in the T20I series in West Indies, where his leadership and composure were well-noted. With several senior players now absent from the squad, the BCB has turned to Litton to guide a young and evolving team through a phase of experimentation and rebuilding.
Vice-Captaincy and Support Roles
In an interesting development, all-rounder Mahedi Hasan has been named vice-captain for the next two T20I series. According to cricket operations chairman Najmul Abedin, the vice-captaincy is not a permanent post but an opportunity to groom future leaders.
“Mahedi has shown solid tactical awareness. His performance and temperament make him an ideal candidate for this temporary role. It’s about building leadership under Litton’s guidance,” said Najmul.
Upcoming Assignments and Squad Announcement
The 16-member squad announced for the T20I series in UAE and Pakistan includes:
Squad: Litton Das (capt), Tanzid Hasan, Parvez Hossain, Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain, Jaker Ali, Rishad Hossain, Mahedi Hasan (vice-capt), Tanvir Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Nahid Rana, and Shoriful Islam.
This tour will be Litton’s first challenge as full-time T20I captain, and a key opportunity to establish his leadership style and batting role—reportedly at the crucial No. 3 position.

BCB’s Long-Term Vision with Litton Das
Chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain emphasized that the selection of Litton is a long-term strategic move. “We’re entering a transition period with many experienced players no longer part of the setup. Litton brings a blend of maturity and tactical intelligence. He must now lead by example,” said Ashraf.
The BCB plans to use the upcoming Asia Cup and bilateral series against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and India as a platform to build a consistent and competitive squad for the T20 World Cup. While form has occasionally been an issue for Litton, the management is confident that stability in leadership will help him flourish.
Plans for ODI and Test Captaincy Still in Progress
While the T20I captaincy is settled, the board has yet to announce full-time captains for the ODI and Test formats. Najmul Abedin explained that filling those vacancies is a top priority. “Leadership is a long-term responsibility. It’s not just about match day tactics—it’s about shaping the team culture,” he said.
