Jos Buttler’s Heroics Steer Gujarat Titans to Historic Chase Against Delhi Capitals

Buttler’s Blistering 97* Leads GT to a Record IPL Run Chase

In a high-octane clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium, a courageous and cramp-stricken Jos Buttler hammered an unbeaten 97 off 54 balls to help Gujarat Titans (GT) pull off their first-ever successful 200-plus run chase in IPL history. The thrilling last-over finish saw GT defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by 7 wickets, marking DC’s first failure in defending a 200+ total in 14 attempts.

PowerPlay Brilliance from Both Sides

Delhi Capitals: Quick Start, Early Jitters

Delhi opened aggressively with a 73-run PowerPlay, despite losing Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abishek Porel early. KL Rahul came out swinging, targeting Mohammed Siraj with a quickfire burst. But Prasidh Krishna’s clever variations dismissed Rahul, halting the early momentum. Karun Nair and Axar Patel then stabilized the innings momentarily.

Gujarat Titans: Sudharsan-Buttler Punch Back

GT responded with a 67-run PowerPlay, led by Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler after Shubman Gill fell to a direct hit. Sudharsan found boundaries with finesse, while Buttler punished DC’s inexperienced spinner Vipraj Nigam with back-to-back sixes. GT stayed ahead on the run rate from the beginning.

Buttler’s Middle-Overs Masterclass Turns the Tide

After surviving Kuldeep Yadav’s opening spell, Buttler unleashed his wrath during the middle overs. His aggressive strokeplay particularly against Mitchell Starc in the 15th over, where he struck five consecutive fours, turned the tide in GT’s favor.

Sherfane Rutherford, after a sluggish start, joined the assault with consecutive sixes against Mohit Sharma, contributing a vital 43 off 26 balls. GT outscored DC in the middle overs by registering 91/1 compared to DC’s 77/2.

DC’s Late Push and GT’s Calm Finish

Delhi’s Death Overs: Ashutosh’s Late Surge

Axar Patel’s cramps and Ishant Sharma’s exit due to heat added to DC’s problems. But Ashutosh Sharma provided late fireworks with two sixes off Prasidh Krishna, helping DC breach the 200-run mark. GT’s bowlers, especially Krishna with 4 wickets, still kept them within reach.

GT’s Chase: Tewatia Seals It

Despite a few tight overs by DC bowlers, Rahul Tewatia finished in style. With 10 runs required off the final over, he wrapped up the game in just two balls – a six over midwicket followed by a fortuitous boundary.

Match Summary

Delhi Capitals: 203/8 in 20 overs
(Axar Patel 39, Ashutosh Sharma 37; Prasidh Krishna 4-41)

Gujarat Titans: 204/3 in 19.2 overs
(Jos Buttler 97*, Sherfane Rutherford 43, Sai Sudharsan 36)

Result: Gujarat Titans won by 7 wickets.
