No Complaints from Klaasen as South Africa Makes Quick Stop in Dubai Before Champions Trophy Semifinal

South Africa’s Brief but Eventful Dubai Visit Before Key Clash
South Africa’s Champions Trophy squad made a swift 18-hour stop in Dubai before returning to Pakistan for their crucial semifinal clash against New Zealand. While the tight travel schedule was far from ideal, Heinrich Klaasen and his teammates made the most of their brief stay, stretching their legs, relaxing, and even enjoying a round of night golf.
South Africa’s Travel Schedule Amid Champions Trophy Adjustments
The South African squad flew from Karachi to Dubai on Sunday after their dominant seven-wicket win over England. This was a precautionary move in case they had to play their semifinal against India in Dubai on Tuesday. However, India’s 44-run victory over New Zealand in Dubai meant that South Africa would instead face the Kiwis in Lahore on Wednesday. As a result, the Proteas had to board another flight back to Pakistan just 18 hours after landing in the UAE.
Mixed Reactions Over Travel Adjustments
South Africa’s Perspective on the Tight Schedule
Despite the logistical challenge, Heinrich Klaasen remained unfazed, acknowledging that such travel arrangements were part of the tournament’s scheduling. “We knew there was a big possibility that we might have to fly up and down,” Klaasen said in a press conference on Monday. “It’s not ideal for the body, but at least we had some time to get out, walk around, and loosen up.”
While the South Africans had a quick layover, Australia also made an early trip to Dubai, which worked in their favor as they are now set to play India there on Tuesday.
India’s Advantage in the Tournament’s Structure
A significant talking point throughout the tournament has been India’s preferential treatment in the scheduling. Unlike other teams, India has played all their matches in Dubai, avoiding the constant travel and adjustments required of other squads. This setup has sparked criticism from players such as Pat Cummins, Aaqib Javed, and Rassie van der Dussen, who have pointed out the disparity in conditions.
However, Klaasen downplayed the controversy, suggesting that the focus should remain on performance rather than logistics. “To win this tournament, you’re going to have to beat two very good teams, regardless of where you play,” he said.
Making the Most of Dubai: Rest, Golf, and a Break from Cricket
While the South African squad had little time to relax, they managed to make the most of their brief Dubai stay. Several players opted for a round of night golf, while others explored the city’s shopping malls and vibrant streets. Interestingly, the squad did not spend their time analyzing the India vs. New Zealand match, even though its outcome determined their next opponent.
“We definitely didn’t use our 18 hours to watch cricket, but I know some of the coaching staff did,” Klaasen revealed.
The Road Ahead for South Africa
With their brief Dubai stint behind them, South Africa now faces a tough semifinal against New Zealand in Lahore. If they manage to defeat the Kiwis, they will either face India in Dubai or Australia in Lahore for the final.
Regardless of the location, Klaasen is confident that the Proteas are ready for the challenge. “No matter where you play around the world, you have to play good cricket. If you want to reach a global ODI final, never mind win it, you have to do so for longer than 18 hours.”
