Australia Faces Major Setbacks as Cummins and Hazlewood Ruled Out of Champions Trophy 2025

Injury Woes Hit Australia Ahead of ICC Champions Trophy
Australia’s preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have been dealt a severe blow, with captain Pat Cummins and pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood officially ruled out due to injuries. The 2023 ODI World Cup winners will also be without all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who withdrew due to a back issue, and Marcus Stoinis, who recently announced his retirement from ODIs.
These unexpected setbacks mean Australia will need to make four key changes to their squad before the start of the prestigious eight-team tournament.
Selectors Confirm Absences and Look for Replacements
Australia’s Chairman of Selectors, George Bailey, confirmed the unfortunate developments, stating that while the absence of key players is disappointing, it also presents an opportunity for fresh talent to shine on the world stage.
“Unfortunately, Pat, Josh, and Mitch are managing some ongoing injuries and haven’t recovered in time for the Champions Trophy. While disappointing, it does present a great opportunity for other players to perform for Australia in a world event,” Bailey said.
Captaincy Change on the Cards for Australia
With Cummins sidelined, Australia will need a new captain for the tournament. Head coach Andrew McDonald revealed that selectors have been in discussions with Steve Smith and Travis Head as potential replacements for the leadership role.

“Steve Smith and Travis Head are the two that we’ve been having conversations with while we’ve been building out that Champions Trophy team along with Pat back home,” McDonald stated.
“They’re the two obvious ones. Steve has done a great job in Tests, and he’s also had experience leading in ODIs. So it’s between those two.”
This leadership decision will be crucial, as Australia aims to defend its reputation as a dominant force in world cricket.
Australia’s Champions Trophy 2025 Schedule
Australia has been placed in Group B, where they will face some of the toughest teams in world cricket:
- February 22 – vs England
- February 25 – vs South Africa
- February 28 – vs Afghanistan
- March 4 & 5 – Semifinals
- March 9 – Final
The road to the semifinals will not be easy, especially with major personnel changes. However, Australia remains confident in its depth of talent.
What’s Next for Australia?
With the tournament fast approaching, the selectors will soon announce replacements for the missing players. Several emerging talents and experienced campaigners will be in contention to fill the gaps left by Cummins, Hazlewood, Marsh, and Stoinis.
While the absence of key players presents a challenge, Australia’s rich cricketing depth could see them remain competitive in the tournament. All eyes will now be on the leadership decision and the squad reshuffle as the team prepares for its opening game against arch-rivals England on February 22.
