Australia Dominate England to Retain Women’s Ashes with Commanding Victory

Australia Clinch Women’s Ashes in Style

Australia retained the Women’s Ashes with an emphatic 57-run win over England in the first T20I at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Powered by a brilliant knock from Beth Mooney and a clinical bowling performance, the hosts set an imposing target of 198 and bowled England out for 141 in just 16 overs. This victory gave Australia an unassailable 8-0 lead in the multi-format series, ensuring they retain the coveted trophy.

Mooney’s Masterclass Sets the Tone

Explosive Start by the Hosts

Opting to bat first, Australia got off to a blazing start. The first two overs yielded 20 runs, including seven extras, forcing England skipper Heather Knight to introduce Charlie Dean early. Beth Mooney and Georgia Voll capitalized on England’s sloppy fielding, as Mooney was dropped by Amy Jones, and Voll by Lauren Bell. Australia raced to 38 in just three overs.

Mooney Anchors the Innings

Voll fell LBW to Bell, and England managed to contain runs between overs 4-6. However, Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield broke the shackles in the eighth over. Litchfield showcased her range of strokes, including reverse sweeps and switch-hits, before being run out after a 50-run stand. Mooney, undeterred by missed chances, reached her half-century and kept the scoreboard ticking.

Late Surge from McGrath and Harris

After losing Ellyse Perry and Annabel Sutherland, Tahlia McGrath provided a late flourish, smashing 18 runs off a single over from Sarah Glenn. Mooney continued her aggressive approach before being stumped off Freya Kemp. Contributions from Grace Harris and Georgia Wareham in the death overs propelled Australia to an imposing 198/7.

England’s Collapse Under Pressure

Early Setbacks for England

Chasing 199, England’s innings got off to a disastrous start as both openers, Maia Bouchier and Danielle Wyatt-Hodge, were dismissed for ducks. Despite the early blows, Sophia Dunkley and Nat Sciver-Brunt counter-attacked, adding 36 runs in two overs to keep England in contention.

Dunkley’s Lone Battle

Dunkley continued to fight, smashing boundaries and reaching her fifty with ease. However, regular fall of wickets at the other end hindered England’s progress. Alana King and Tahlia McGrath struck crucial blows, dismissing Knight and Dunkley, respectively, to tilt the match firmly in Australia’s favor.

Australia’s Bowlers Seal the Deal

England’s lower order crumbled under pressure as they lost their last six wickets for just 31 runs. Georgia Wareham and Alana King starred with the ball, sharing five wickets between them, as England folded for 141 in 16 overs.

Key Performances

Brief Scores:
Australia: 198/7 in 20 overs (Beth Mooney 75, Tahlia McGrath 26; Sophie Ecclestone 2-26).
England: 141 in 16 overs (Sophia Dunkley 59, Nat Sciver-Brunt 20; Georgia Wareham 3-25, Alana King 2-14).

Key Highlights

  • Mooney’s Brilliance: Mooney’s composed yet aggressive knock of 75 anchored Australia’s innings.

  • Wareham’s Impact: Georgia Wareham’s spell of 3/25 dismantled England’s middle and lower order.
