King’s Brilliant Spell Seals Australia’s 21-Run Victory Over England in Ashes

Australia continued their dominant run in the ongoing Ashes series with a hard-fought 21-run win over England at the Junction Oval in Melbourne. The thrilling low-scoring encounter saw Australia extend their Ashes lead to a commanding 4-0. It was the spin duo of Alana King and Ash Gardner who played a pivotal role in Australia’s triumph, choking the English batting with a brilliant display of spin bowling.

Australia’s Challenging Total

Australia’s innings got off to a steady start, with both openers making valuable contributions. Alyssa Healy’s blistering knock of 29 from just 19 balls included six boundaries, while Phoebe Litchfield’s 29 was a more patient effort, lasting until the 18th over. Litchfield formed a crucial 49-run partnership with Ellyse Perry, who top-scored for Australia with 60 runs.

However, after the promising stand, Australia’s batting collapsed dramatically. From a comfortable position of 131/2, they lost their last eight wickets for just 49 runs, folding for 180 all out. Alice Capsey was the chief architect of the collapse, claiming three quick wickets, including that of Perry, Annabel Sutherland, and Ash Gardner. Despite some resistance from Kim Garth and Alana King, Australia’s innings ended on a low, leaving England with a target of 181 runs.

England’s Fightback Falls Short

Chasing a modest total of 181, England’s top order faltered early. Kim Garth struck twice with the new ball, dismissing both England openers within the first six overs. However, the experienced duo of Heather Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt steadied the ship with a 41-run partnership, but their efforts weren’t enough to take England closer to the target.

A Stunning Bowling Display by Alana King

The turning point of the match came when Heather Knight fell to a simple return catch off Ash Gardner’s bowling. Soon after, Alana King struck a decisive blow by cleaning up Danni Wyatt-Hodge with the very first ball she faced. King then added the scalp of Nat Sciver-Brunt to her tally, reducing England to 88/5.

Amy Jones, who remained unbeaten on 47 from 103 balls, found some support in Alice Capsey, but the partnership was broken when Garth trapped Capsey LBW. King was relentless, delivering the knockout punch by removing both Charlie Dean and Sophie Ecclestone in successive deliveries in the 39th over.

With the tail exposed, Jones was left to fend off the Australian bowlers, but it was only a matter of time before the hosts sealed the win.

Australia’s Victory

Australia’s total of 180 proved to be enough, as England were bowled out for 159 in 48.1 overs. The combination of King’s exceptional spell of 4/25 and Garth’s 3/37 helped Australia defend a modest total successfully, extending their Ashes lead to 4-0.
