Hardik Pandya to Play in Vijay Hazare Trophy from Saturday
Baroda Allrounder Changes Decision Amid Domestic Cricket Demands
Pandya’s Return to Domestic 50-Over Tournament
A week after reports suggested that Hardik Pandya would skip the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT), the star allrounder has reversed his decision. Sources from the Baroda cricket camp confirm that Pandya will feature in the tournament from Saturday, December 28, as Baroda faces Bengal in their third-round match in Hyderabad.
The Baroda team, led by Hardik’s brother Krunal Pandya, has already secured victories in their first two matches against Tripura and Kerala. This fixture marks a crucial point in the competition as Baroda seeks to maintain its winning streak.
“He had some personal issues and that is why he was not available for the first few games. He has reached Hyderabad and he will play tomorrow,” said Ajit Lele, Secretary of the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA), on Friday night.
BCCI’s Directive on Domestic Participation
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the national selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, have mandated player participation in domestic tournaments, unless specifically exempted. Hardik Pandya’s decision aligns with this directive and provides a significant boost to Baroda’s lineup.
Initially, Pandya planned to join the VHT during the knockout stages, scheduled to begin in his hometown on January 9. However, his recent discussions with Baroda coach Mukund Parmar have expedited his return.
“He has had some discussions with coach Mukund Parmar and will be playing from now,” added Lele. Parmar also confirmed that Pandya will be in action against Bengal.
Pandya’s Domestic Cricket Journey
Hardik Pandya (31) has focused predominantly on T20 cricket over the past 14 months. Since injuring his ankle during the ICC Cricket World Cup in October, he has featured in 38 T20 matches, including international games, IPL fixtures, and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). Pandya’s performance in the SMAT included 246 runs and six wickets over seven matches, helping Baroda reach the semifinals.
The VHT represents a crucial opportunity for Pandya to regain match fitness and prove his readiness ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy, slated for February-March 2024. Selectors are expected to closely monitor his performance during the tournament.
Upcoming Matches for Baroda
In addition to Saturday’s game against Bengal, Baroda will face Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi in their upcoming fixtures. With Pandya’s inclusion, the team’s prospects for advancing in the competition have significantly improved.
