ACB Extends Jonathan Trott’s Contract Until 2025
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has extended the contract of head coach Jonathan Trott by another year, ensuring his continued leadership of the national team until the end of 2025. This decision comes in recognition of Trott’s impactful tenure over the past two-and-a-half years, during which Afghanistan has made significant progress in international cricket.
Trott’s Impactful Tenure and Afghanistan’s Milestones
Since taking over, Trott has guided Afghanistan through a period of remarkable growth. In 2024, the team achieved a historic milestone by reaching the semifinal of the T20 World Cup for the first time ever. This success was followed by a strong performance in ODIs, where Afghanistan secured series victories over South Africa and Bangladesh in Sharjah.
Trott’s leadership also played a key role in Afghanistan’s campaign during the 2023 ODI World Cup. The team managed to secure memorable wins over Pakistan, England, and Sri Lanka, finishing in the top 8 of the tournament. These accomplishments have earned Afghanistan a spot in the 2024 Champions Trophy, marking another historic achievement for the nation.
Trott’s Limited Role in Zimbabwe Tour
Despite the extended contract, the ACB confirmed that Trott will only be in charge for the ODI leg of the upcoming Zimbabwe tour due to personal reasons. As a result, former Afghanistan cricketers Hamid Hassan and Nawroz Mangal will step in as the head coach and assistant coach for the T20Is and Tests during this period.
Looking Ahead: Afghanistan’s Cricketing Future Under Trott
With Trott at the helm, Afghanistan’s cricketing future looks promising. His leadership has ushered in a new era for the team, and the ACB’s decision to extend his contract reflects confidence in his ability to continue steering Afghanistan towards greater success. The upcoming Champions Trophy and other international assignments will offer further opportunities for Afghanistan to solidify their status on the global cricket stage.
