Dwayne Bravo Announces Retirement from All Forms of Cricket
West Indies cricket legend Dwayne Bravo has officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. This announcement comes after a frustrating stint in the 2024 Caribbean Premier League (CPL), where Bravo’s participation was cut short due to an injury. The all-time leading wicket-taker in T20 cricket, Bravo previously announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) last year, marking the end of an illustrious chapter in his career.
A Career Filled with Triumphs and Challenges
In a heartfelt message shared on his Instagram account on September 26, Bravo reflected on his 21-year journey as a professional cricketer, expressing gratitude for the experiences that have defined his career. “It’s been an incredible journey, filled with many highs and a few lows,” he wrote. He emphasized his commitment to the game, stating, “I was able to live my dream because I gave you 100 percent at every step.”
Despite his love for the sport, Bravo acknowledged the physical toll that cricket has taken on his body, saying, “My mind wants to keep going, but my body can no longer endure the pain, the breakdowns, and the strain.” He expressed a sense of responsibility towards his teammates and fans, adding, “I can’t put myself in a position where I might let down my teammates, my fans, or the teams I represent.”
Celebrating a Stellar T20 Career
Bravo’s remarkable career spans 18 years in T20 cricket, during which he achieved significant milestones, including multiple championships across various leagues such as the CPL, IPL, Pakistan Super League, and Big Bash League. He has won five CPL titles, three of which were with the Trinbago Knight Riders, leading them to consecutive victories in 2017 and 2018, as well as steering the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots to their first championship in 2021.
In addition to his league success, Bravo is also a two-time World Cup champion with the West Indies, leaving behind a legacy marked by an impressive tally of 631 wickets in 582 T20 matches. His contributions to the sport will be remembered fondly as he transitions into a new chapter in his life.
Earlier this year, Bravo hinted that the ongoing CPL would be his final season, a statement he reaffirmed as his career came to a close. Although he had been retained by MI Emirates in the UAE’s ILT20, a groin injury sustained during a recent CPL match ultimately curtailed any plans for an extended career.
Bravo’s departure marks the end of an era in T20 cricket, and fans will undoubtedly miss the excitement and skill he brought to the game.
