New Zealand Includes Rosemary Mair and Leigh Kasperk in T20 World Cup Squad
New Zealand Names Mair and Kasperek in Women’s T20 World Cup Squad
New Zealand has announced their 15-member squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, which will be held in the UAE. The team includes fast bowler Rosemary Mair and off-spinner Leigh Kasperek, both of whom are set to play crucial roles in the tournament.
Rosemary Mair and Leigh Kasperek Return to the Squad
Rosemary Mair, who had been sidelined with a back injury during England’s tour of New Zealand earlier this year, is making a comeback. Mair’s injury had kept her out of the subsequent ODIs and the return tour in June-July. Her return will be a significant boost to New Zealand’s pace attack.
Leigh Kasperek, who made a successful return to international cricket during the T20I leg of New Zealand’s tour of England, is also included. This World Cup will mark Kasperek’s fourth appearance in the tournament, strengthening the team’s spin department.
Veteran Players Set for Ninth T20 World Cup Appearance
Captain Sophie Devine, who will be stepping down from her T20I captaincy after this tournament, and former captain Suzie Bates are gearing up for their ninth consecutive T20 World Cup. Both players have been part of every edition of the tournament since its inception in 2009 in England.
The squad largely consists of experienced players, with wicketkeeper-batter Izzy Gaze being the only member without prior T20 World Cup experience. Devine expressed her enthusiasm for competing in what she believes is a vital tournament for the growth of women’s cricket.
Coach’s Perspective on the Squad
Head coach Ben Sawyer expressed his satisfaction with the selected squad, stating that these are New Zealand’s best 15 players suited to adapt to diverse conditions expected during the World Cup. He highlighted the valuable experience of Devine and Bates and noted Mair’s successful recovery from injury.
Sawyer praised Kasperek’s return and the hard work she has put in to be fit for the tournament. The team is also set to compete in a three-match T20I series against Australia from September 19 to 24, before heading to the World Cup.
New Zealand is placed in Group A of the World Cup, alongside defending champions Australia, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The team will play warm-up matches against South Africa and England before commencing their campaign against India on October 4.
